Chronicle, Jan. 1, 1889. Nevada connty claims apecial attention ag one Of the few counties of Californiain which the three principal itdustries of the State—mining, agricu!ture and tiorticulture—are extensively carried-on side by side. ‘The county is accessible by rail, the Central Pacific Railroad running along its southern boundary, a considerable-distance, and crossing its extreme eastern erid, while the Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad intersects its eontral portion, extending north from Colfax to Nevada City andpassing-throagh Grass Valley in its route. Geographically the county lies a _trifle—north-of: the central line of the State, and—extends from thé Sacramento valley “on the west to and beyond the summit of the Sierra Nevada. Inthe western portion ‘the altitnds averages some 1300 feet above the sea level, and the surface consists 6f gently sloping hills and-ridges with here and there large sized tracts of com: paratively leyel land. In the central section is the upper paft of the horticultural’ belt, and here also are most of‘the great quartz and-gravel mites which have since pioneer days been yielding such vast quantities of gold. The eastern extremity: is very mountainous in character, the principal industries thereof being lumbering, iceshipping and grazing. About 250,000 acres of land are contained in the horicultural belt of the county, which iniz udes the townships of Nevada, Grass Jalley, Rough and Ready arid Bridgeport. A great variety of productions is insured within these limits. Fruits and vegetables maturing early, or requir ing a long and warm season, thrive particularly well on-lands-facing to the south where the rays of the eun. have full force; -while the larger and more slowly maturi froits flourish’ on the cooler and moré moist 7thds with a northern exposure. Tle valley lands between the ridges and hills have in ‘most cases but little brush upon them, . ‘and though well furnishéd with water from springs and streams are ‘not as well calculated for fruit growing as for the production of hay and pasturage. Among the most profitable fruits to be raised here is the pear, which is followed closely by the apple; both attaining in Nevada county the greatest perfection in size, flavor, and keeping qualities. Grape growing is rapidly becoming an important industry here, this being the natural. home of the vine. Nevada county port wine hae}. f°" [already i in two competitive exhibitions Where the principal wine-producing sections were represented, earned the first prize, and.other varieties of wine shown have stood high in the list of successful competition. The olive thrives here, attaining perfection in size and quality. In the extreme lower portions of the county the orange is profitably grown, the fruit maturing unusually early and a full crop being generally obtained. No county in the State is more abundantly watered. Mining and irrigation ditches, fed from natural and artificial lakes -inthe higher altitudes, thread all sections. This water is of the purest, and the supply never fails. The climate has an invigorating freshness and salubrity that is not to be found in-lower lands. There are no fogs, no blizzards, no malaria. Large numbers of people come annualJy from the. seacoast and valleys to spend the snmmers here, and thus rebuild their shattered constitution. Adjacent to Nevada City and Grass Valley are located such‘ well-known an@ productive , guartz mines as the Providence; Nevada ‘City, Wyoining, Pittsburg, Neversweat, Idaho, Empire, North Star and-many others. The princip :] claims are equipped with the most modern machinery fur mining and milling. Washington and Eurek» townships have been for the pa-t few years rapidly riting into prominence as quartz-mining xections, and several properties there—such as the Califonia, Kocky Glen, Washington, Yuba, ete.—are paying well. A: number of others are estined to soon hecome dividend payers. The Delhi of Bridgeport township bas within two years come into prominence as one of the best properties in the State. Other
claims in that locality now being prospected give ‘indications of proving ua'ly rich.
