The Virginia City papers give on account of an attempt to assassinate Wm. Odgers, formerly of this county, but new of Virginia. It seems he was'seturning from the Theatre, and when near the Fourth Ward Nevads County, = — The Stock Report of San Francisco is now publishing a series of articles in relation to the mines of this ‘county, ‘The following is letter No 1: “Though not so colossal initheirwealth as the miuch noted mines of the Comstock, the. mines of California, the quartz, drift and bydraalic mines of our own State, still form far too importaat.an item in the world’s treasure prodyce to be passed over with au occasional notice. All of which shows that self-restraint is not practiced and self-denial is not a common virtue. : ' -_— Oer Financial Cundition, A New York paper has been makdng a comparison between the financial condition of the United States and that of other nations, and thinks Americans have less cause to be discontented than the people of other countries. According to the best authority, the depreciation of national bonds of European countries is ers cf these worthless. bonds are ehiefly Englishmen. The extravagant system upon which the various nations of the earth have for years conducted their financial affairs have found a fitting termination in bankruptey, cominercial disaster and general weakening of public credit. The Carp was originally a native of Persia, and ure they sometimes-nttain_the-weight-of} and day is. requiced to successfully transfer these fish to any great distance. They are said to be similar in some respects to the white iish of the East. The Gold-fish belong to the same family.’’ >< — ——_— Millinery and Dress Making, Miss Lottie Weiss gives notice to the ludiés of Nevada City and County, through the columns of to-day’s Transcript, that she has returned from San Franciseo, where she has served a regular apprenticeship in millinery and dress making, under the best teachers in that city, and is now prepared to cut, fit and make all kinds of ladies’ dresses in the most fashionable styles. Bonnets and bats made to order, and old ones yepaired and made fashionable. She also cleans-and whitens gentlemen's Panama and Leghorn hats. Her residence is on Sacramento street, this side of Weiss’ Brewery. What a Fall! A San Francisco paper finds, upon doing ‘a little figuring, that from Wednesday, the 11th instant, to Monday, the 16th, when stocks were nearly out of sight, the decline in the apparent value of the leading twenty-five Mines on the Comstock listed in the Big Board was $11,449,400. From the latter date to the quotations of Thursday morning’s board, there is noted an advance of Sugar Loaf. The Grass Valley Union comments as follows upon an item which we published a few duy since, about Sugar Loaf: If we remember correctly the Sugar Loaf was fixed up, in the early days, asa place Of resort. The top of it was leveled off asa picnic ground and a road was graded, screw fashion We believe that not more than one picnic was ever beld there, and that the then owner abandoned bis plans of putting up a hotel. ia Nevada City, 4 question coming up on Pacheco’s petition for a peremptory writ of mandate to compel Secretary of State Beck to canvass the votes in the Gee McLean, Sweetiand Thos L Hughes, Ranch a Nevada has facilities for mining unequaled probably in any county in California. The elimate is most salubrious, and the miner, practically exempt from the danger, of fever orchills, or miasma, or any of the other ills which haunt tod many California mining regions,-can parsue his labor with eomfort and safety. Access is easy by rail -to Grass Valley in a single day, and hotel accommodations;etc., are-thereequal to that of any interior town of the State. Grass Valley, by the way, is thé site of the first quartz: mill evet put up in California, Wood and water, those indispensible requisites for mining, dre abundant throughout the county, and tire grouad itself literally teems with richness, Nevada City mines, notwithstanding their comparative proximity, are not so well known in this city as they onthe stock boards, and many of them ere ran by private enterprise, or extremely limited companies— limited in nunshers, we mean, not irNability. As mentioned above, the three great classes of gold mining are to be found county, pamely quartz, hydraulic and drift mining. The latter is far the most important. The old river channels have been demonstrated to be extremely rich, in spots almost fabulously so, but in general the lava deposits is too hard to admit of hydraul cism, and the work is consebed rock frome shaft. No gold in paying quantiesis found in the wp.per strata of the gravel, and the top ofthe drift tunnels is consequently rarely more than three feet above the bed rock, From this confiued space some fabulously rich dirt has been. taken out. A new drift. recently sunk near Grass Valley, is yielding as high’ as $500 per day, and the owners confidently expect to be able to-imcrease the yield to $1,000. We shall mention a few of the more prominent hydraulic and drift works In our next number of Nevada county. ~ ARTICLE No. 2. The drift mining may be said to’ be the future of the county, and preSeiito ud, icuuiu record in the past, ‘as wellas golden prospects for the future. Indeed the contrast of ' the success of “drift mining alone with thac ofhydraulics, is a strong argument in favor of the former, perhaps more expensive but certzinly more thorough method, though it must be acknowledged that the lava in -the old river channels in Nevada county virtually. precludes hydraulicism, Nevada City and vicinity bass wonderfal record in this class of. mining in the past. In the pasf€ eighteen years and within an area of eighteen miles square around Nevada City, no less than $80,000;000 has been tuken out, Wells, Fargo’s shipments from Nevada county, which, although the principal is by no means the sole bullion delivery, from ap interesting record and highly encouraging one for the future of the county.
