NEVADA OFPY, CALIFORNIA,
COUNRY & CITY OFFICIAL PRESS.,
he DAY, APRIL 21,.1867.
Union County Centra CoMMITTEE.
‘There will ‘be a meeting of the Union
County Central Committee, on ‘Thursday,
the 26th day of April, 1867, at 2 o’clock
P.M., at the Armory of the Nevada Light
‘Guard, Nevada. City. A full attendance
is requested. ;
N. W. KyNow ton, Chairman.
A. C. Niuzs, Sécretary.

RE@isTRATION.—Tfiere are now something over two thousand names enrolled
upon~the Great Register’ The voting
population of this county 4s in the neigh~borhood of five thousand. —In—other counties registration is slower than here, and
it is evident that unless something is done
to bring ‘the people up, the vote at the next
_ Btate election will be exceedingly small.
Citizens should take an interest in urging
their neighbors to enroll, and the members
of the Central Committees in the various
‘districts should see that all voters are
qualified. The: registration of names is
/ attended with no expense. The names of
native citizens may be given to the county .
Assessor or his deputies. Naturalized’
citizens must apply 'to the County Clerk,
and that officer will visit the various townships in order to give them ‘an opportunity. The registration of names is. only
required for oncewhd is for ever after an
evidence of citizenship. The naturalized
citizen, after being enrolled, has his evidence of citizenship, without being required on any occasion to show his papers,
The good effects of the registry law, in
preventing fraud and illegal voting, have
~ already become-manifest,and-in a great
measure the purchasable material is excluded from a patticipation in politics.—
Men who use corrupt means to secure
their ends usually rely upon ‘illegal yotes
ta, do it, and these being effectually excluded, the field for such praetices is limi
ted. Every good citizen’ should sustain
this law and see that its provisions are
carried out and that the people avail themselves of the privileges conferred by it.—
+ Letitbe remembered that no man will
_ be entitled to vote in September next at
the State election if he is not enrolled upon
‘the Great Register. There ought at least
to be four thousand names upon the Great
Register of this county by this time.

_. A FONeRAL IN THE Syow.—On last
‘Thursday week, P. Casteel, who resided
‘on Catreet, Meadow Lake, went to his
house in the evening, and being missed by
his friends, on Saturday they searched
for him and. found him smothered in the
snow. The house is a story and a half
high and was entirely buried in the snow.
By the snow that occurred on Tuesday
night, the stove pipe was covered. It is
suposed Casteel endeavored to make a
fire without getting an opening to the
surface, and in trying to get out of the
smoke Was sthothered. He was found
laying in the window of the upper part
of the house, half in the house and half
inthe snow. His body was recovered on
Saturday. and the funeral was very novel
and imposing. The snow is twenty feet
deep on theaverage. A sled was used as
& hearse and the long procession followed
on snow shoes. The solemnity of the
scene was not even broken by the rattling
of wheels, and as the procession moved
along so noiselessly on the snow, following
the poor man to his: last resting place,
those who witnessed the scene were impressed more deeply than by any burial
they had ever witnessed. The grave had
to be dug through sixteen feet of snow before a burial place could be reached.
THE FLAG.—The American Flag, D. O.
McCarthy editor and proprietor, has reappeared ; this time smaller, but neater in
typographical appearance and cheaper.—
The first number contains excellent reading matter, and the paper will be a radical Union journal, In the introductory,
the editor says: “We intend to afford a
journal for the people, which by its own
force and attractions will necessarily make
ite way to an ‘extensive circulation and a
corresponding influence.” We wish the

THE WEATHER.— Yesterday Was an exceedingly sultry day, just the right kind
to precede a thunder storm or an earthquake. At this writing there is a fair
prospect for another storm. <9
WATER SPout.—On Tuesday last, says
the San Bernardino Guardian of March
23d, the rain poured down with unprece_
dented violence. in the Cajon Pass, <A
cloud burst in that vicinity and the water .
came rushing down the canon, in a mass,
at least four feet high, tearing away everything in its course. “The deluge lasted
about half an hour; had it continued
throughout the day this whole valley would
have been submerged.
SP
RoBERT STEPHENS was very fond of .
reducing his scientfic reading to practice;
and after studying Franklin’s description
of the lightning experiment, he proceeded
to expend his store ot Saturday pennies in
purchasing about half a mile of copper wire
ata brasier’s shop in Newcastle. Having
prepared his kite, he sent it up in the field
opposite his father’s door, and bringing the
wires, insulated by means of a few feet of
silk cord, over the backs of some of far. .
mer Wigham’s cows, he soon had them
akipping about the field in all dirpetions
with their tails up. One day he had his
kite flying at the cottage door as his father’s galloway ~ hanging by the bridle
to the paling, w iting for the master to
mount. Bringing the end of the wire just
over the pony’s crapper, 80 smart an electric shock was given it, that the brute was
almost knocked down. At this juncture
the father issued from the door, ridingwhip in hand, and was witness to the scien.
tific trick just played off upon his gatloway.
“Ah! you mischievous scoundrel!” cried
he to the boy, who ran off.
He inwardly chuckled with pride,never.
theless, at Robert’s successful experiment.
