ar e 2 7 James Marshall, the Discoverer of Gold. . We yesterday met JamesMarshall, the discoverer of gold in California, who gave what he calls a ‘camp talk,” Or-® narrayevents connected with his dieenw { Pat? F¥ . ee Oe a J ea Pa wg aa sanity is unknown. He started for SteckThomas Brannan, Ag ge stabbed Herman, was yesterday pronouncef insane by Doctors Huntatid Cummings and ordered to Stockton.. He is a native of Treland, aged about 25 and cameto this State four years since from Pennsylvania. Brannan after he was committed to jail, attacked # sick prisoner and shut him up ‘in a cell, locking the door, The ¢ause of his inton to-day in-custody of A. B. Carley, ve ie ial Deputy . Sheriff. —jnforms-us-that-afterhie Aieacites. of gold, z in January 1848, he escorted &'party of emigrants.to.this Siate, and. came ;down theridge upon which the Banner mine is lovated, in June 1848 with his party. He at that time and camped a mile or so above town. He washed out some of the gravel on the banks of that stream and found gold prospects. Mr.Marshall came to this ~=--State:in-1845.. Hewas-compelled to change his course oh account of the high water on the Missouri; or he would havé réached California in 1844:' He’ went north ard came.by way of Oregon. His discovery of gold peopled California and influenced the ‘ trade of the civilized world. He is now an old man and ought to have 2 Competency. A Good Mine. The Maricetta-mine, located.on the banks of the Seuth Yuba, above. Washington, is proving ohne of the most valuable quartz mines_of this county, and it is_so extensive as well as rich that the owners, Lindsey & Co., formerly of San Juan;propose increasing the capacity and improving the works this Summer. The ledge averages 12 feet wide. and pays all round $20 to the ton. The Company has opened the ledge and \ ggushed enough.rock to demonstrate the uniformity of yield’ and size, and prove that they possess a mine of immense wealth. The operations of this, the Star and other mities in that section of the county, this Spring and the good results therefrom, will give a new impetus to prospecting and lead to the development of other valuable claims. b Sale of Mining Claims. ’ The sale of the extensiye hydraulic and cement mining claims as well as the ditch property of Ed. Williams, at You Bet, has . been negotiated with Mallory & Stone-and some other parties living at. Gold Run, ‘Placer ‘county. The price to paid is $55,000 and the’ bargain to be closed in tén days. There was some talk of selling this property toan English Company, but they failed to come: to termes, and: the new company was organized here and the sale made as above. This makes.the third sale of extensive mining property made in Nevada within thirty days. »-Mr.Williams does not, propose to’ Jeave the county, but thinks some of ‘coming to Nevada or Grass Valley to reside. Po @dd Fellows’ Anniversary. The Oustomah Lodge, No. 16,1. 0. 0. F., of this city, will celebrate the 51st anniversary Of:the introduction of the order into the United States, on next Tuesday evening (April 26th.) Past Grand Representative, ‘Chas. The members. of the lodge are requested to meet at the lodge room at¥ o'clock, P.. Visiting Brothers and Sisters are fraternally invited to attend. The Fable of Distances. We publish to-day a valuable table carefully compiled from the ‘‘Field Notes” of H. 8, Bradley, who has been for ‘some time past surveying the County Roads. In some instances small fractions are omitted, but nearly all the distances given are exact. The suryey of roads in Little York and Meadow Lake townships is not completed. These we will publish as seon as they are finished. These tables are worth preserving as nearly all our citizens have occasion to refer. to distancgy f from one place to another in the county. Free Lecture. Dr. J. Simms, of ‘New York, will deliver @ lecture on Physiognomy, in Nevada Theaptess Of the principal Atlantic’ cities and San Franciseo'as well Sacramento, highly commend his lectures.
