NEVADA CITY, CALIFORNIA,

-, LOCAL INTELLIGENCE,”
Mine at Retiree Hot.—Since the
strike by the Welsh Co. at Relief Hill
the miners in that locality. have been
greatly encouraged. The channel
struck by this company is supposed. te
be a continuation of iat worked by .
the Union Co., on account of the similarity of the gold and nature of the
deposits. If this-be the case, all the
companies working upon that range
_.will eventually open on the same chan“nel, and the little camp will grow to a}
Fespectable town. The Eagle, Welsh,
Union;~What Cheer and North Star
companies “are now washing. The
Union Co. cleaned-up ‘$3,400 last week.
This is. the ground in-which the tremendous blast of 450 kegs™ef_ powder
_ was discharged, last Fall. There. was
a question as to the success of this blaat-.
but the company is now opening on the
ground loosened; and find that it did
The North Star
company last week discharged a blast
or 200 kegs of powder, which loosened
up an immense body of dirt, Besideg
the operations of these companies, a
large amount of prospecting is being
done in the vicinity.
MINING at EurREKA.—The Snap
Company struck a splendid ledge last
week. This company has been running
for the lead about one year. The point
where the ledge was tapped was 200
feet below the surface, and gold ‘could
be seen in nearly every piece. of rock
taken out. Sam. Hartley, who left
' Eureka on Friday last says the snow
was nine feet deep. N otwithstanding
. the deep snow a large amount of under. . "
ground work has been done during the
Winter, and the leads are “looking up”
as the miners go down. It is predicted
that Eureka will be a very lively place
during the Summer.
MINING IN Lirt.e York. -Towx-—
snip.—Nefirly all the hydraulic mining
companies in Little York township are
now at work. At You Bet nine compa_ nies are washing, with excellent pros
pects. The cement mines are also
yielding good returns. The Brown
Bros. have struck richer. cement. than
they have ever had before. From their
claim $3,000 were taken out last week.
~Neece & West are averaging about
31,500 per week, and Heydliff—has
struck first-rate cement. The Chalk
Bluff Gravel Mining Co., Stranahan, Superintendent, is doing well. They have
struck fine bed of gravel, containing.
coarse gold, and expect to. take out a
large amount of “dust” during the season. All through Little York township the miners are prepared for work,
. and have-every prospect for-a—presperous season.
SaLE or Mining CLAmMs.—Mr. Nichols
of Columbia Hill, recently purchased a
set of mining claims from Mr. Jones, at
Grizzly Hill, for $17,000. There is
every prospect that extensive mining
operations will be conducted in these
claims during the present season. They
are situated on the ridge above Cooper's
bridge on the Yuba.
Tae Mouawk.—The Mohawk quartz
mine was last worked by Kidd & Tisdale, and they lost the shaft in 1866, at
a time when they were taking out ex,
cellent specimen rock. The mine has
since passed into the hands of Mr. Bar.
ber, and will, we understand, be opened
thisSummer. .
A New Lepce —Mr. Stede, the otiginal locator of the Mohawk ledge, has
struck a four foot ledge about.a mile
from town’and east of the Grass Valley
toad. The ledge has a first rate appearance and the rock looks as though
it would pay well.

ses which they call the Globe Nozzle.—
. It consists of a ‘globe or socket joint,
havitiga canting fifteen inches in diameter.. The inner hemisphere fits
smoothly to the inner surface of the
outer sphere—the former being sup‘plied with the escape pipe and the latter with the supply pipe. The entrance
is six inches in diameter and the escape
five and a half. The pressure of water
on the interior of the globe causes the
‘surface to fit closely together and-there
is no leakage. The escape pipe may be
turned easily either in a perpendicular
or horrizontal direction so as to’ throw
water over an extent of forty-five degrees, and the range will be greatly increased by attaching a short hose to the
nozzle. The object of the invention is
to change the direction of a stream
without trouble, and also ‘to do this
water. The nozzle has been tested with
fifty feet pressure, and to-morrow it will
be tried at. Marselus &Maltman’s diggings with 180feet pressure and a three
inch nozzle. . ~~. ge

At the north end of the Suspension
bridge, where the foot-way on the
bridge turns toward the sidewalk, the
vehicle was overturned, and the little
abutment, a distance of six or eight
feet, alighting within a few inches of a
rock. Strange to say, the child did not
receive a bruise.

NEw Post Rovure.—A petition is in
circulation in this city, asking for the
establishment of & postal route from
Nevada to Washington and Omega.
Heretofore this has been a special route,
and the mails have been carried as an
accommodation. The towns of Wash. ington and Omega are important points,
and the citizens ought to have regular
mail communication with other parts of
the State, ‘The petition was signed by
all to. whom it was presented.
LivELy.—For several days past quite
a number of persons have been in town,
. drawn hither by the cases on trial or
for the purpose of purchasing goods.—
The streets have presented a lively appearance and the merchants have done
a brisk business, ~~ ip at
May Party.—aA_ grand social party
will be given by P. A; Paine, at his hotel, Lake City, on the evening of May
1st. The ride to Lake City is a pleas
ant one, and by the first of May the
roads will be in good condition. The
party will be largely attended by peoNew Driver.—Johnny Roys, formerly of the Grass. Valley stage line,
now swings the ribbons-over the team
from this city to Colfax. Johnny is a
first rate fellow, and travelers maybe
assured of courtesy when he is on the
box.
A GravE CHAarGE.—Wnm. Holbrook
yesterday appeared before Judge Ken«
dall for trial upon the charge of assault
and battery upon Dr. Babcock, when
this charge was withdrawn and one of
assault with intent to do bodily harm,
substituted. He was placed under bonds

line. The Siegrists form a distinctise

AN ACCIDENT.—On Monday last the
wagon of W.8. Frink, loaded with
wood, was overturned on Boulder street,
and Mr. Frink, who was driving, was
considerably bruised about the hip and
legs. Boulder street, in the vicinity of
Park Avenue, is said to. be in such 0
condition that it is almost impassible
even with an empty wagon:~ ‘
