THE DAILY TRANSCRIPT. .
NEVADA CITY, CAL, Malt
Established in 1860.
BROWN & CALKINS, Proprietors
Nevada County Oficial Pres, . iiss: “or pornape they ec

SATURDAY, APRIL 22.
THE ONLY WwaY TO DO IT.
It is commonly agreed that the
only way to rid ourselves of the
Chinese is to quit helping them
make a@ good living in our. midst,
In San Francisco many of the very
leading citizens are joining leagues
and taking the following pledge:
Wuereas, Chinese im mn
to the United States is Gotrtedetean
to the -bestinterestsof the white
Trace, and, if not speedily checked
' and prevented, will lead to the degradation and death thereof; be it
Resolved, By the mem rs of the

chase any goods, either directly or
indirectly, manufactured in America
by Chinese labor Fourth—And we
further pledge ourselves to aid, sustain, ree. and defend by every.
available means our co-workers
herein, and that we will use all lawful means to remove the . Chinese
from our midst and frofi our shores
now and forever.
It_is-believed this movement can
be made. so universal all over the
coast as to accomplish the desired
purpose. Politics has nothing to” do
with it, and it will not if properly
managed have anything to do with
Politics. “No howling demagogues
should be permitted to make a tool
of it, although doubtless there will
be plenty of a certain school to try it,
There is some talk that the league
pledge should have incorporated into
it a proviso naming the first of
January next as the date when every
Chinese employe should have been
discharged, This is Zach. Montgomery’s suggestion, ond it is not a
badone. Large manufacturers and
other men employing numerous
Chinese could not change their
forces on a day’s notice, but must
have time to hunt up competent
white labor.
Every town on the Pacific Coast
should help to settle the Chinese j
trouble, now that it can be: done so
easily. To make the crusade a success, the rich as well as the poor, the
employers as well as the employed—
in fact all classes of citizens, must
lend their support to the measure
by carrying out the principles presented in the league pledge.
