H. 8. Bradley, shows that the reseryoir supplying the town with water is seventy feet
higher than the highest point to which water

_W.C. Stiles, of this city, has fovmnint
and applied for a patent on a new sulphuret saver, which is said by mill men, to be
the simplest as well as the most effective
separator in use, It does its work with
rapidity, and saves over ninety per cent.
It would pot be proper at this time to describe the machine, but we have examined
it and the results of its working. It seems
to us that Stiles has struck just the right
A Break Down.
On Thursday a tremendous crash occurred.at Stiles’ mill, and a moment after the
machinery stopped. For a time it was’
feared a serious accident had occurred. An
examination showed that the whole bottom
on the wheel, had fallen out.’ Fortunately
the large water wheel was not injured, and
the damage was repaired so that the machinery was again started yesterday athe;
noon.

For several days past a deaf mute has
been about town selling pictures. He communicates with others by © writing, and in
this way carries on a correspondence quite
rapidly. He writes a good hand, spells
corréctly, and seems to be well educated.
Real Estate to Mortgage.
Those who’ have money loaned and desire
to save taxes should get some real estate
and put a mortgage for the amount on it.
A store box sown in wheat, or a lot in a
grave yard is just as good for the evasion of
the tax as the most valuable real estate.

On Monday night the policy of an immediate abolition of polygamy by the United

Last Day.
Next Tuesday will be the last day allowed
by law for the filing of application for deeds
to city lots. After advertisement and sale
the costs will be doubled.

Dog Poisoning. ;
Yesterday morning some five or six dogs
-. were poisoned in the vicinity of Main, Boulder and Sacramento streets. As is usually
the case, the largést number killed were valuable dogs.

John Dawley, has been in town for a day or
two, visiting his friends. He has the appointment of Mail Agent for Arizona, New
Mexico and Colorado.

Dr. J. Simms, of New York, will déliver
& lecture on Physiognomy, in Nevada Theatre on Saturday evening, April 23d. The
press of the principal Atlantic cities and
San Francisco as well Sacramento, highly
commend his lectures, The largest collection of oil portraits in America can be seen
in the Theatre on the evening of the lecture. All should avail themselves of the
opportunity to listen to this intellectual
treat. Doors open at balf past 6, lecture to

THE PrercE MuRDER.—The Appeal
says : Jas. and Thos, Rose,two brothers,
and Wm. Rosé.a son of the latfer, were
arrested on Wednesday charged, with
. the murder of E. A, Pieres, and taken }—
before Justice Quigly, of Yuba City,
and admitted to bail in the sum of $2000 each for their appearance before
said Justice today for examination.
The deceased and James Rose were
claimants to the 160 acres of land occupied by Pierce,-and }was “jumped,” ai
it is termed, by him.
