It is hard to discourege ae. managers either of the Union or Central
Pacific Railroads. ‘The late freshet
onthe Union Pacifie road has been
very damaging to the track, and has
‘delayed operations on thewhole
line, The compnny has, however,
made strenuous efforts to repair damhages, and ‘have about sneceeded in
making everything all right again.
That company has been, for the past
ten days, feeding over six thousand
‘ passengers at their own expense.
Freshets on the Union--Pacific or
‘now onthe Central: Pacific has no
discouraging effects upon either com.
pany, ‘The advantages of the overJand road to this coast are never appreeiated until a temporary delay
makes their want felt. There are, it
is said, no less than four hundred
‘ears of freight between Omaha and
Evanston waiting forthe road to be
repaired, and freight cars continue
‘to leave Omaha at the rate of fifty a
sday. There is also an immense
amount of mail matter delayed for

We think the prices paid for the
services of county officials in particular, are none to great, and in
fact not enough to pay competent
men to fillthém. ‘An able, upright
man, with good business qualifications can always secure a larger salaty than is now ~paid— officials, That
is the only kind of men wanted in
office. There-are—handreds of men
who would gladly accept the offices
at half the salary now paid, but that
kind of men are not wanted.. We
believe it to the best interests of the
county and people to pay liberally
for valuable services, The loss resulting from the blunders of the incompetent and the peculations of
‘thé dishonest will always overbalance the difference paid in the:price
of their services. Elect able men,
pay them well, and keep them in office when they preve themselves fitted for it; is our motto,
