The gradation citicised by the Grass Valley Union exists only in the imagination of the writer, Just think of it; eleven grades, and minds of the people as touching’ the education, custody and euntrol of these precious jewels, you will allow me now to suggest the paramount importance of selecting on next Satarday .three Directors in whom the'people can confide the care of the children, who constitute their precious jewels. Nevada County Oficial Press. FRIDAY. APRIL 27. THAT BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY RESIDENCE and Property, known as (WHERE THE TROUBLE Is. The Grass Valley Union of yesterday says: ““The school children have taken so much interest in the Institute, or the fine music that is presented there, that -their large atteridance has become an obstacle to the transaction of business. Yesterday not less than 150 attended the afternoon caused great inconvenience and 80 much confusion as to greatly interrupt the proceedings. In order to remedy this it has heen decided by the Institute that during the re_-mainder_of the sessions, to be held. to-day and to-morrow, no children under sixteen years of age will be admitted. It is hoped that parents will notice this rule and impress upon their children the necessity of staying away. While it is creditashould desire to attend the Institute yet it mast be remembered that the meetings are. held not for their instruction, but for the benefit of the teachers,” cated say that as a school it has thus far been almost a failure, but as a “show” it has been ‘‘immense.” An elaborate musical programme, — réflecting the greatest credit upon the performers, has Ween carried out _ from day to day, to the great delectation of the seventy-five or so teachleast four dollars each per day for the time that they are in attendance. Let us see what this Institute costs the tax-payers: For the five days it continues the aggregate per diem of those in attendance will not fall short of $1,500, while the incidental expenses muat be at least $150, The question arises, can we in these hard ble to the. little folks that theytreach the High school at fourteen apupil must pass through all o! them in three years, (a, school year in this city is ten months) or rather less than three months in a grade! This is news for our pupils, teachers and the community. The schools of this city are divided into Primary, Grammar and High. grade in the Primary or Grammar schools in one school year. Pupils of more than ordinary capacity can, and-do,;-accomplish the work in less There are pupile, too, who take more than vight years to do the work of the Primary aud Grammar grades. Our critics seem to forget that-education is a development of powers the pupils have, not a warfare on nature. As pupils enter our schools at six years of age they can years of age, and pupils of superior ability (or of early development) can’ be advanced to that schovl earlier. Our High school consiste—of.-three This gradation is similar to that of San Francisco, Oakland and Sacramento, It is that adepted in nearly all the cities on the Pacific coast. ‘The course of study in OUR schools is also very nearly the sme as that in the cities I have narsed, On this But all divide Primary schools into four grades of one-year each, and Grammar schools into four grades of one year each. A practice almost universal must be based on sound reasons. Are all the educators o! the United States wrong and Mr. Caldwell right? There is no room for a middle course. coast a High school eyurse is,usually, . . provisions of the Political Code of this State that women ‘are equally eligible with men to all educational offices within this State; and entertaining the highest regard for the pledges made by Mrs. Bradley, Parsons aud Rolfe, I take pleasure in seconding their nomination to that their election, which I believe is certain, they will devise salutary measures of reform, * J, I. I desire information on the subject of bugs in general and the manner in which they may be exterminated withont pain, Therefore can you inferm me as to the nature and habits of grasshoppers? What are their size, color and previous condition of servitude? How many young san they rear ina litter, and how long do they have to set on the eggs. before hatching? How do they attack your orchards? Do they gnaw the bark all around, thus kill” ing the tree, do they subsist. on the foliage, or do they climb the tree, ) pluck the green fruit amd hide it under the haystack, the same asl used to do whena boy? I would also like to know as to the best method of destroying them. Which is better, poison scattered around or a shot gun?
