Phis may appear a rather blasphefaous heudittg, but if so, we are not fo blame fof it, for the great Russian Peary thé immaculate Czar; the Ohristian par excellence of the world norant serfs @rivén by liquor and religious enthutiasm into the very jaws of death, ousands . BR. B. Morrison, the ptésent City Marshal, isacindidate for re-election, Mortison lite. madé = good Marshal. — 2 Heary P. Sweetland, an old and highly respected Nevada county man, died at San Franciseo last week, . He came to California in 1849, from Memphis, Tennessee, and settled at Sweetland, the town which now bears his name, in ‘1850. All who éver knew Mr. Sweetland will feel sad to Tearn of his decease. He was a genfriend. -The Camden Company, better known as the Carney & Goodspeed, which pristine “the ease, Werclnim that itisan ingad, as he says, all for the church of Obrist. It m $s he-Christ’s Vicar on earth? In Our humble opinion he is neithera oe Otristian nor o frathful man, for he goes to’ battle with the name of the Most High on bis lips and“ murder ofd has the Bussian nation for pra focting Poles and others that refused fo bow their necks in slavery to the Worst autocrat the world’s history ¢télla of! We heard it said last eventng; and by a man of sensey too, _ that the Great Rater oftimes makes fize of poor implements to accom-. lish good ets, That is not 80, or Wit is, the Scriptures ure not true, nd the great First Cause is brought Below the level of humanity. God is worshippéd by the Turks, and faithfully worshipped; but sttong the ignorant Rassiaus such is not fult to the Deity to for # moment suppose, much less to intimate, that Hie, the Almighty, would use the power of such a nation as Rassia to Sieh out a peopte that-worship Him-+ far more and fuithfaly than their ‘@pponents do. After expressing the Py As +o %e may well pause aud shudder at ft Gold Hill News on this subject, we take the liberty of reprinting part of &u editorial in that papar for the édification of our mountain readers. Is thers a man, woman or child in this world who imagines that, Russia @ares anything for the Church of @hrist? Is there a man, woman or éhild who does not know that the Ovar goes into war with the same objects in view which Russia had in’ 4827 and 1856? Audis there @ man, Woman or cbild who caauot see that fiilessoutside aid comes to Russia sho will be whipped more thoroughhy than she was iv the Crimean war? ‘The Ogar Alexander is Known as & remarkably smart man; but smart fuen sometimes fall; and ‘the Czar is. 4ti unfortunate example of this fact. He attempted to bulldoze Europe, 4nd Burope declined to be bulldozed. He had no idea of goingto war in the first place. He was not prepared for it; be is not prepared for it vow. But the gtotind which he occupied Hias forced him into war. He is obliged to fight now, or sink into itter insignificance’ as a European filer, The question which Alexunfer should ask himself is, which fuie is preferable, to sink into utter insignificance «rto be whipped out aitogether by Turkey, as be certainly Will be if he islet alone to fight his Gwn battles. The declaration of war is made, however, and once again the old fmaxim is verified, ‘‘whom the gods Would destroy they first make mad.” She Caur hos become mad, and bas placed himself aud Lis high empire ou the verge of destruction. Ovr . own country will gain by the war, We shall sell our products to both Turkey and Russia. Bat when we #onsider the oceans of blood which tnost flow to give us this advantage, “the cost. Mas.
