This notorious individual, who is now in jail in this city, awaiting the action of the Grand Jury, on the charge of burglary on the San Juan ridge, is well known to the police of San Francisco, where he was once accounted a most dangerous. criminal. About eight years ago he entered the house of a man named Stone, near Lone Mountain, and was discovered. He opened fire from a aevolver on Stone, and discharged two shots before Stonecould get hold of him. In the struggle, Winters fired another shot which tore the middle finger of his left hand. Soon afterwards Detective Lees learned tha he was in one of the hospitals. Even then he fought the officer with all his strength, but without avail.
