The Skating Race.
On last Saturday evening the skating rink was crowded to witness the
contest for a prize—a pair of handsome sleeve buttons, presented by

As the contestants entered the arena,
they were greeted with applause by

Nevada bore away the prize and honors in a similar contest a short time

from that place were desirous of retrieving their lost reputation, and
they succeeded most nobly, although
Nevada was but-six seconds behind.

The Burglar Winters.
This notorious individual, who is
now in jail in this city, awaiting the
action of the Grand Jury, on the
charge of burglary on the San Juan
ridge, is well known to the police of
San Francisco, where he was once
accounted a most dangerous. criminal. About eight years ago he entered the house of a man named
Stone, near Lone Mountain, and was
discovered. He opened fire from a
aevolver on Stone, and discharged
two shots before Stonecould get hold
of him. In the struggle, Winters
fired another shot which tore the
middle finger of his left hand. Soon
afterwards Detective Lees learned
tha he was in one of the hospitals.
Even then he fought the officer with
all his strength, but without avail.
He was finally convicted of burglary
and served seven yearsin the Penitentiary.

Infection in the Air.
At this season the vegetable world takes
a new lease of life; but to the sensitive and
delicate members of the human family it is
a time of danger and often of great suffering. The moisture which rises from the
earth and hangs suspended over it in the
form of morning and ¢vening mists and
fogs, holds in solution, so to speak, the mephitic elements which produce fever. and
e, remittent fevers, rheumatism,and
feed painful nervous difturbances, and
whichuggravated dyspepsia, biliousness and
all minor affections of the stomach and the
bowels. This, therefore. is.a critical period of the year,sa season when the renovating, refreshing and purifying operation
of the mightiest of all vegetable tonics and
alteratives, Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters, is
salyation to the weak and the’
for the continuance of the health‘and vigor
of the strong. Now is the time not only to
protect the system against the common xilments of the season, but to prevent the dis?
orders incident to a warmer temperature.
Let not the exhausting heats of the Summer
month find you unprepared to meet them.
A course of Hostetter’s Bitters, commenced
now, will putall the physical energies in
fighting trim double the capacity of the internal organs to repeal the causes of disease
refresh the brain and clear it of all hypochondriaeal cobwebs, and place the whole
physique in an attitude of defence, with
every available point fortified and guarded
and ag nearly invulnerable to unwholesome
influences as it is possikle for the human
structure to be.
