Te= stu, A‘l'vz the they ing, this ashial and ort nos ‘ifees, &c. ap3 injured by «fall at the mill on is on the third floor, above the —the ground floor being flights of stairs. On Sunday morning » < State that can show a cash balance in every _-gutstanding. ‘The’ city is éntirely out of NEVADA CITY, CALIFORNIA, ——— Nevada is probably the only city in the fund, and that has neither scrip nor bond debt, with about $426 balance in the Gener__course work required by the city may be residence. bis “town financially, is partially the result of . providing for the acquisition of Govern~werk of Shly a minute, and a purse conal Fond, and our citizens rejoiee inthe’ motto of the City Fathers should be “Rigid, economy in the management of business, @ and cash payments hereafter.” By such a: more cheaply done, and the town will be‘ -g#ade a desirable place for business. or The present prosperous condition of our economy and the revenue derived from the government titles to city lots. As our citizens are aware, 8 -years ago the city was several thousand dollars in debt. By an tof Legislature the rate of taxation Was leit in order.to liquidate the indebtedness. This, during the two years, made quite a considerable decrease, and the law ment titles to city lots levied amueh heavier tax than was required to pay the. expenses, and also made provision for the transfer of the surplus from the Land to the General Fund, after paying expenses, Under this law $1,000 was transferred at the last meeting of the Board. After paying all scrip outstanding and demands of every nature against.the General Fund, there remaips a surplus of $420 in that Fund. The balance in all the funds standing as follows: General Fund = $42000 Fire Fund + $895 66 Land Fund + . +. $795 00 Total cash in Treasury $2,110.66 In addition to this there remains uncollected on the Land Fund from $1,000 to $1,500, a large part of which will be paid before: the, expiratien of thirty days. cording to this figuring the assets of the city at the beginning of next year may be safely estimated at $4,000. This being true, the property tax for the General Fund might salely be omitted altogether, or at least greatly teduced. & It is.a matter of congratulation that’ the city is 1p. so healthy .a. financial, condition, + and now, near the beginning of a change in the administration, an effort. should be made to secure the services of the best business men a8 Trustees, The same caution exercised’ih the management of the affairs of a corporation is seldom used when money is on hand-as is necessary where debts are heavy, and, in this. view, it is sometimes claimed that a debt is beneficial to Government. Butno one would argue for such 4 proposition if business is well managed, and in the hands of good business men. Let the citizens of Nevada determine to seeure the services of men identified with the city thoroughly honest.and competent, andthe city need never be obliged in the futuxe, to issue a single dollar of scrip. Bold Robbery. .One of the boldest robberies evercommitted in this city was perpetrated at the bakery of Julius Dreyfuss on Sunday night. Mr. Dreyfuss closed up about 9 o’clock in the evening and went home, and between that time and I o’clock, when Fritz commeneés baking his morning’s bread, some . rogues entered by the front door, which is only fastened by an ordinary lock. They went to a closet-in the back part of the store, and after lightiug a candle went to work. Cutting around the jam of the door was the taining $25 in half dollars was taken from the shelf. , & bank box was then open with Dreyfuss can opener, from Which $500 in ‘currency, belonging to Henry Smith of the’Cascadés, by whom it was deposited with Dreyfuss, was taken. The light by which these men operated.could: plainly be seen from the street, as the large windows in the front doors are not obstructed even by acurtain. The robbers must-have; been entirely familiar with the place, as they got their tools on the premises. As the store was 80 Gpéri to view from the street, and a man slept on the premises Mr. Dreyfuss felt, perfectly secure against robbery. This: ‘bold and successful robbery demonstrates that waluablds.are not secure under any circumstances, unless in the vault of a bank Mountain Asparagus. ; _ Wm. BR.
