years ago the deceased and his
brother Nicholas. came to this
county, settling at Rough and

home at Macomb, Illinois. John
has mined at Auburn, in Trinity
county, and in various-other sections, visiting the east two or three
times since he came out first, and
the town of Washington, this
county. More than:a week ago
he had a severe attack of paralysis
and was brought to the hospital.
fle was unmarried and is believed
to have left an estate worth several

Baby Number One.
‘The first white baby born at the
new mining camp in Washington
listrict, saw the light of day last
Friday, and the people up there
feel exceedingly proud of it. There
has never been a marriage in that
section, and we are told but one
death has occurred there. Now
that the ice has been broken in
the baby line, -and--enterprising
families are moving in weekly, we
hope to hereafter get a good many
birth items from the camp.

Why Judge Stidger Midn’t See It.
The Sacramento Bee of
day says:
Satur“Circus agents some/times lie, but invariably have a
iresh invention at hand to bolster
up an old one. It was complained at Grass Valley that a certain
circus failed to show the two-hornad rhinoceros that. was advertised.
In explanation of this the management said that the animal could
not be got through the tunnel on
the narrow-gauge !’’

The Truckee Republican of
Saturday says: The most musical sound to which Truckee has
listaned for many a day, has been.
the clanking of tha ironrails which
have baan unloading at the dapot
during the pasttwo days. Itis a
cheerful, encouraging sound, and
foretells good times and plenty of
work. The rails are for the narrow gauge ‘railroad, whose construction was recently predicted
by the Republican. Where it is
to lead and when it will be commanced, are still matters of conjecture.* It is known, however,
that the owners are Hobart &
Marletts. Twenty-eight tons of
rails arrived Thursday, and one
hundred anitwanty tons ara already within the bordars of California, dastined to b2 brought to
. Truckee as spsédily as_poasible.
The rails are of first-class: material, and the road is to be substantially constructed. Opinion is
equally divided as to whether the
narrow gauge is to run_to.Lake
Tahoe.or in the direction of Independence Lake. Truckee will be
vastly banefitted, no matter what
direction it takes. Itis said that
Capt. J. B. Overton, manager of
the Sierra Nevada Wood & Lumber Company, will be in Truckee
ere the month closes, andes it is
probable that further facts can
then be obtained regarding the
enterprise. _

The New Postage Stamp.
The Postmaster-General has approved the design for the 10-cent
special delivery stamp, authorized
by Congress at its last session.
Che stamp is to be about twice
the size of the ordinary postage
stamp, and of the shape of a dollarnote. On the left of the stamp
there is a pretty vignette of a messenger boy in uniform, and across
the top are the words: ‘‘United
States Special Postage Delivery,’’
and along the bottom the price of
the stamp, ‘‘Ten .(10) cents, U.
3.,”” expressed in figures and letters. Conspicuous on the body
of the stamp are the words: ‘‘Secures immediat2 delivery at the
special delivery office.’’
