FRIDAY

MORNING, APRIL 7.
QuARrTz aT Rouen AND Reapy.—Durcing the past three months considerable interjest has been awakened in the quartz leads
Jocated in.the vicinity of Rowgh and Ready.
Much prospecting has been done, and: some
rock showing excellent indications. has been
taken cut. But is consequence of the re~~ moteness from mills buf little has’ yet been
tested. Along Deer Creek, and in the neighborhood of Newtown, leads of great value have
been opened, but are worked at great cost.
because of the long distance and bad roads
ever which quartz has to be ‘hauled, We
aré glad to learn-that a mill has beea erected
by the Smith Brothers, at Rough and Ready,
to accommodate thé quartz miners in beth
the above districts. The new mill is now
completed, and was started for the~first
time on last Tuesday. It is driven by a
water wheel thirty-six feet in diameter, and
‘can_be ran with ten inches of: water. It. is
designed for ten stamps, bnt as yet only five

are in operation. The mill worked toa] _
charm ow ite trial; and will undoubtedly
soon be turning vut considerable quantities
of gold. This mill in an indispensible agent
fer the development of the resoerces of-the
country around it, and will doubtless: incite
the prospectors for quartz.to more. vigorous
work. The owners of the mill are ex-As.
semblyrian A: A. Smith, and Jom Smith.
They are both owners in the Union ledge,
Jecated on Little Deer Creek.
