, What Two Visitors Think.
Prof. Mills, a distingyjshed min‘> eralogist of St. Louis, Mo., arrived
“in this:city ‘last “week, and spent
aan most _of Friday at the Providence
-mine. He left to examine tlie Ida‘ho, and proposes to retura’here again
at an-early date. The Professor was
: surprised. to tind such.gdod prospects,

A leading expert who ‘was sent

He
what he was doing. . While m the
.eity he stated to a gentleman that he
did not expect to find such an invit-ing field for profitable mining investments. He said Re had first com‘of the coast, leaving Nevada and
Sierra counties as the last point, believing them to be of the least im“portance. After arriving he regretted ‘that he bad not spent here als af
‘ the time allotted to him, as this dis“trict was beyond measure the best
and richest of any he had seen. The
‘recommendation he would give to
parties hie represented would be to
imines legitimately. He-continued :
‘Nature has done everything for the
-cheap.and advantageous working ef
your mines, Theréis plenty of water, wood, living is nos. expensive,
there is good railroad coimmuniva“tion, and I am surprised that Nevada
City doeSnot™have a population of.
twenty thousand souls, instead of
-six or seven thousand.” He thinks
the majority of the people here fail,
to appreciate the extent and permanent character of the mineral bearing deposits. Men from abroad have
to come here and point the facts out
to many of us. ‘They confidently .
-andemphatically assure us that the
time is not far distant when we will
have more diyidend paying mines
-open. than any. other district of the
size on the continent.. They prove
their sincerity by, investing. The
Providence and Merrifield mines will
calready bear comparison with any on
the coast, and it will-not be long
when the Fortuna, Nevada City, Mt.
Auburn, Banner, anda host of oth-ers will also come to thefront. The
rich quartz is-in the ground, and only needs developing.
Just as the expert was about get:‘ting aboard the train to leave he re_ mmarked ton acquaintance, “‘[ am

my life is spared I will be among you
cagain soon, Rest assured of-one fact.
You will before many years ‘have in

A Big Wistake.
Evrror Traxscriet:—Ther Grass
Valley Union of last Saturday comes
out in a manifesto that contains some
of the most ridiculous assertions
in regard to the relations of the
Democracy to the Workingmen’s
party of California. After declaring
that the result of the recent election’
in San Francisco was due to the fact
that the Workingmen had discovered Kearney’ and Kalloch~ to be
selfseeking demagogues, it goes on
to say that the Workingmen have
discovered the Democratic party to./
he their “‘true friend” etc.,. ete.
Now the truth is that the recent
defeat in San Francisco was due to
the fusion of Worsingmén and Democrats. As all admit, thousands of
Workingmen did not vote at all, and
because they wou'd not—consent to
be thus made tools of by those who
wanted ‘‘victory at any price.” It
stands as‘a fact, that Workingmen
can to-day in California poll more
votes alone than when they miscegenate or combine with the Democrats !
In my opinion whoever e’sethe
never be such idiots as to ‘support
the wretched clique in Nevada county, who call themselves “The Democracy.” The bitter fanatical hatred shown by the Union and its ilk
Workingmen is of itse:f sufficient
cause for eternal oppoyition to them
and to their politics. . Those who
vowed on the rostrum ‘and proclaim:
ed from the printing press, that ‘‘every Workingman that voted for the
new Constitution should be compelled to starve” are nice heralds to. negotiate an alliance with their whilom
persecutors. Nov much, Mr. Union.
the* Workingmen of Nevada county
cannot thus forgét the past. It will
take some years before you again
can seduce them into becoming ministers to yourselfish schemes. You
dote on Field,.a, Democrat whose devision on the hair cutting ordinance
injured the cause of white labor more
than any other thing since the Burlingame_ treaty. You dote on Bayard who take such -a_ strong stand
against the repeal of the Burlingame
treaty, You did what you could to
prevent Chinese laundries in Grass
Valley from being compelled to pav
special taxes. You gloated and exulted’over the recent decision declaring the law against corporations
employing Chinese ‘unconstitutional.
You literally opposed the nomination
of Glenn because he favored the new
Constitution. Every day for years
you have in'so called editorials spit
your venom against every person
and principle that beeame identitied
with the Workingmen’s party. —
Other papers and parties were content te fight fairly. You have fought
fouland struck ‘‘below the belt,” whenthe past? Not much, Other papers
and parties were contest to oppose
the W. -P. C. during election times.
Your malignity knew no choice of
time, but became and remains the incessant dribble of a blackguard,
And now you want ,to coax and
wheedle those’ who left following
—tocome back to their chains, I
tell you atl your billing and cooing
will not avail. The Workingman of
Nevada county will not be entangled
again in your meshes. ' He will vote
and in doing so must, of necessity,
vote against you and your old leaky,
racy. Selah. A WoRKISGMAN.

“By the way,” asked the stranger,
“doyou know Charley Pearson over

“Oh yes,” replied his honor.
“Iam glad of it. Now sir,” this
with a suddenly assumed confidential air, ‘Iam notin the habit of

The law dispenser was amazed,and

The Bonanza mine at Howland

washing/last week they took out
something like [50 ounces.
As we goto press it israining, with
the mercury standing at 50 degs.,
which insures rain on the ridges.—
This is what the miners want, but it
will take a week of steady rain to
start water suflicient to set the monitors in motion.
A man by the name of Cornelius
Malleis was found dead in his cabin
across the river from John Scott’s
Hotel, at Sierra City,a few days
since. He was an old and _ feeble
man and appearances indicated that
he had been dead many days. The
verdict of the Coroner's Jury, was
that death resultedfrom natural
causes.
The Debris Bill.
“Monday the Senate Committee on
Irrigation reported favorably on: the
Debris bill. Satterwhite presented
a minority report on the ground that
it was unjust to tax the whole
State for the benefit of hydraulic
mines; furthermore, that the dain on

Announcements of startling discoveries by Edison must now
be: taken with a degree of
caution, Not that great discoveries
by him are »mprobable, or that he is
insincere in his statements; bnt the
greed of speculators and the *‘enterprise” of newspaper reporters bring:
his experiments prematurely *before
the public, and generally in exaggerated forms. As to the electric light,
false expectations were raised in the
‘public mind, although such an eminent authority as. Prof.,Barker of
Philadelphia, declares that the success of the ‘‘Wizard” in that undertaking willeprobably be conrplete, after-he has had time .to perfect -the
details of the plan. ‘The receat payment-of-$180,000 bythe Western

As tothe announcement that’ he
has made a discovery which will enable him to abstract. millions—of dol-lars from -the waste of California
mines, itis to be assumed that reportorial *‘enterprise” has published
some splendid exaggerations, «For
examp.e; it may beras well to dropa
cipher from the $50,000,000 which the
inveutor is announced: to extract
from the tailings of the mines. from
the mines of Oroville. ‘But that elececnomical separation of precious metals from the wastes.of the mines” is}
not hard to believe. In fact, it is.to
be expected that Edison wil achieve
