THE DAILY TRANSCRIPT. NEVADA CITY, CAL. FNEVADA COUNTY N, G, BL R. CO. Annual Meeting, Officiz! Reports and Election. “Established ‘in 1860. BROWN & CALKINS, Proprietors. Nevaia Connty Oficial Press, FRIDAY, APRIL 7. THE LATEST NEWS. Mrs. Hughes, aged 70, dropped dead at’ Petaluma Tuesday. . At Leadville, Col., James Kinney fatally shot John Lukenvill. The Cheyennes and Arapahoes are threatening an outbreak in Indian President -Arthur_was_ hung and . 18 burned in effigy at Santa Cruz and other points, White graders refuse to let Chinamen work on the railroad in Sonita : valley, -Arizona. The Massachusetts Senate ‘hat passed the House bill to allow women attorneys to practice. In a recent engagement the Peruvians lost 2,000. men, and their commanders were made prisoners. Charles Gunson, who assaulted a three-year-old girl, was taken from jail at Kokomo, Ind., Monday night, and hanged. In kindling a fire with kerosene near Los Angeles, Mrs. Cleveland and her husband wéie severely burned and the house destroyed, The Coroner’s jury at St. Joseph returned a verdict of willful murder in the first degree against Robert Ford, who killed Jesse James. A policemen was killed by a negro at Kansas City, Monday night, and a mob caught the mur ~ derer (as they supposed) and hanged him; but it-was found. subsequently that they had executed the wrong ~ man, and a serions riot resulted. There were local elections in Ohio Tuesday. The Democrats carried Cincinnati, Toledo and Clevland, mainly upon the temperance issue; The same issue was up in the local elections in Indiana and the Dem-. ocrats won upon it. The question was upalso in Michigan, but there it was.a two-edged sword. MAR GET The Vete. Eprtor Transcript:—To be spanked by a Democratic President would be hard indeed to endure, but to receive such a severe castigation from the Republican President, as the Republican party of this coast has in the veto of the Chinese Bill, 1s doubly. severe. We as Republicans must endure stigma cast upon us by Mr. Arthur in this act, and yet we do not nor never will accept the exultant declaration of a Democratof this town who when he heard of the veto gave _ Yent tohis pleasurable surprise by . the exclamation, ‘‘Arthur has vetoed the Republican party.” Neither _ will we accept the sorrowful moan of some honest though weak Republicans, who areso entirely dejected by this unfortunate veto as to also feel as though the assertion that ‘Arthur had vetoed the Republican party” was true. No, Republicans, the old party that is the exponent of all th t is good and true; that party which. has _ always been the true friend of labor; that party which has done all that has ever been done to deliver this beautiful State from coolie labor; that party which will yet in the near future deliver us from the loathsome evil, is not vetoed, never will be vetoed. As long as the Stars and Stripes, emblem of our nation’s greatness, shall float from the capital, will the Republican party live. We have received a severe blow on this Coast, but shall we despond ? Shall we be vetoed? As well might you try to bind the old Pacific ‘to the rock-bound shore, or to yon sun command to rise no more. Veto the grand Republican party ? Never, ' Aslong as liberty lives shall the princip'es on which Republicanism is based endure. When liberty dies, and only then, shall the Republican party be vetoed. While we as Republicans do feel sad that the bill which we delivered and nursed from infancy to manhood has been vetoed, yet there is not the least reason for us to give’ up the ship. We are on the eve of an election for State and county officers, therefore gird on our armor, stand firm, and we will demonstrate that.we are not vetoed. For one, I am not inthe slightest degree vetoed. I was never more devoted to the Republican party, never moreanx_ jous or willing ‘to work for her adwohtevements NTIVeETo, Scteeegeeianmerigiaee eg ee Patent Transfer Papers. : A war iron passed over the nak ofthe Parers TRANSFERS the Patterns to any Fabric, Designs in Crewels, ing and Initial ‘Letters. “Mrs. ree fc ; “Main street Nevada City, m28-tf@ffice Room peter Rent. From. the ‘official, reports published in the Union, we learn that the gross earnings for 1881 were $116;465.91. The total operating expenses were $72, 226.64, leaving a net profit of $44,239.27. Superintendent Kidder’s. report.as. substantially as follows : The following table exhibits the year since it was opened for busi$ 70,760 26 90,518 60 98,085 97 116,465 81 . Had it not been for the interfer. 4 ence by means of injunctions by the farmers, with hydraulic mining, our receipts would unquestionably have ‘been-muech—more, as the first five $6000 increase from. the receipts of the.same period of 1880. . There was purchased during the year 116 1-3 gross tons of 35ib. steel last season, and which I. now propose to lay on the first two miles from the turntable at Colfax, during the present month, I have on. hand new angle fish plates which will be much superior to the old fish plates that we have in use : also the ‘‘Valeanized Fibrous Washers” to be used on the fish plate bolts, to prevent the nuts from turning. I intend to order new gpikes, and new bolts for this piece of track, reserving the old ones to be used in repairs. I have resurveyed the line of roadbed where the steel rail is to be laid, and shall be able by means of a comparatively small amount of gradifig, to be done by the section meén, to.reduce the curvature many degrees. There was erected at Colfax, this year, a handsome and convenient . freight transfer platform and: shed some 270-feet in length ; to reach this platform, it was necessary to lay a new track across the Central Pacific Rrilroad, and to grade a new freight yard. All of this work was done by the request of the C. P. R. Co., and although at the time it seemed an onerous expeuse to be incurred by our Company it adds greatto our facilities for handling freight at that point, There have been during the year some 10,000 decayed ties replaced by new hard sugar pine ties. There is but one accident to report, caused by the morning passenger train of August 18th jumping the ‘track, one mile north of Kreiss’ Sumimit, The locomotive turned com. pletely over, landing on its wheels some 20 feet. below the -level-of-—-thetrack. One freight cdr was demolished and the baggage car left the rail, standing at right angles to the same ; the te and firemen were badly bruised, but no bones were broken ; no one else was hurt in the slightest degree, I intend during the’ coming Spring aud Summer to substitute an embankment for the’greater portion of the trestle at Wolf Creek, and likewise fill, both of the trestles near the Kentuck*mine, putting in red wood culverts at both of the latter, The road and its appointments are in all respects in good: condition, and there will in my opinion be no negts for extraordinary repairs duros Rage year ; and I can discern no d reason, why with-—judicious Misserapes and a close watch of expenditures, that the net receipts will not at least equal, and probably excepd those of 1881, The officers of last year were reelected. é NEVADA THEATRE, THURSDAY AND FRIDAY, April 13th and 14th, 1882, ° The Survival of the Fittest !
