SATURDAY MORNING, APRIL 8.

LE
ee
Seeking ComMrort.—The copperhead
organs of this State are endeavoring to con__ sole ope another with the idea that the Con“ federate cause is not in such a strait as appearances seem to indicate. Were any ad”
‘the whole souled sympathy of the copperheads with treason, it may be found in the
spirit manifested by their, organs over the
fall of Richmond. One copperhead finds
“comfort in the fact that the Union autherities have expended more lives and treasure .
in the capture of Richmond than the rebels
have in ita defence. Another, that the city .
was held by Lee so long as it was of importance and then tossed aside-as a useless garment. A third predicts a union of Lee and
Johnston'’é forces, the annihilation of Sher‘man andthe destruction of Grant, and a
fourth urges “‘fellow’Democrats” to rally
in order to prevent. the Abolitipnists from
effecting a reconstruction of the Union after
the rebels have been subjugated: These .
copperheads know that with the overthrow
of rebellion their hopes of success are forever past, and they are therefore enlisted in
its behalf. Had Grant's army been destroyed at Richmond a shout of joy would have
gone up. from the entire cffpperhead party.
‘These men who are now on the side of rebéllion will bear watching. They will remain in the land after the rebellion is crushed, exercising all the rights of citizens, en. deavoring still to prepare the way for another rebellion. The men who now rejoice. at
Union defeats should be watched by the
. people.” They will ever be the enemies of
the nation, and should power again be placed
in their hands it will be used against the .
Government. . The so-called Democracy can
never be trusted agdin, The sins of that
party have.been washed out by the blood
shed in the war against rebellion and the
triumph of the nation: is near at hand. We
\amuiit keep copperheads in retirement if we
ould prevent a recurrence of civil. strife
To CARPENTERS —Proposals will be received by the Board of City Trustees, until
April 2ist, forthe rebuilding of the sidewalk on Pine street, in front of the building
now occupied by Crawford, Leavitt & Co.

determined that an addition should beerected for dressing rooms. When these p
posed conveniences are added the Hook and

floor and is lighted by gas.
Was'nt TO Home.—‘*Uncle Abe” recoutly paid a visit to the rebel capital, but
failed to get an audience with Jeff. Davis
on account of the necessary absence of the
latter. '

GREENBACKS.—We yesterday received a
letter from Dr. N. McNaughton, well known
in this city, in which, was enclosed-one of
duy contains a large amount of interesting
war news. It is now alinost certain that
. Lee's army will be utterly destroyed and
with it the cause of rebellion will be beyond
hope. Right upon the heels of the glorious
news from Richmond comes the intelligence
of the capture of Mobile. On the morning
of the 4th Grant was at Sutherland’s. Station, on the Petersburg and Lynchburg .railBy ge cary io budas taahow’t road, ten miles from the latter place and-+¢,.
about forty from Burkesville. The prisoners captured up to noon on the 4th amounted to over 25,000. Lee hagdivided the remnaut of his army and is, retreating in two
small columns. On the Sth Grant had
‘reached Nottoway Court House. He was
moving with his right wing, commanded by
Ord and Cox, and expécted to reach Burkesville on the night’ of that day.-Nettoway is
about 23 miles from Sutherland’s. While
Ord and Cox are pursuing the retreating
rebels in this direction. Sheridan was. following another retreating column across the
Appomatox, ten miles above Petersburg.—
Meade with his army is also close upon the
rebel rear. The rapidity with which Grant
has followed up every advantage gained .
makes the destruction of Lee's army cer-:
tain. He has signified-his intention to pursue Lee so long as there is any use of it, or
in other, words as long as there 1s “any
thing’ left: of him.” Grant’s. whole loss,
since the 25th of March, in killed, wounded
and captured, will not reach 7,000 men.—
Weitzel captured in Richmond 1,000 prisoners, 3, rebel wounded, 500 pieces of
artillery, and 5,000 stand of small arms.—
The fire kindled by the rebels was extinguished after it had done much damage.
Sheridan ‘in the fight on the 2d won new
laurels. Gen. A, P. Hill ofthe rebels was
killed. Jeff. Davis was in Richmond ,on
Sunday. He left with the rebel troops.—
General Lee_ narrowly: escaped capture.—
His wife still remains in Petersburg. The
loyal Governorof Virginia will soon transfer the’ State Government of Virginia to
Richmond. f
Secretary Seward was thrown from his
carriage on the 5th and received severe injuries. His arm was broken and his face
-much bruised.
Mason & HaMLtin’s CABINET ORGANS.
Musicians are agreed in respect to these instruments that they are unequaled. Mr.
Gottschalk, the celebrated pianist, pronounces the Cabinet Organ “truly a charming
instrument, worthy of the high praise it bas
received,’* and_ “sure to find its way into
every household of taste and refinement
whichcan possibly afford ita. muderate expense.” He also declares it far superior to
anything of its class he has seen. He knows
of what he speaks, having tested them thoroughly in his concerts the past year. Our
t eminent organists fully indorse this
rosea We need only add; therefore,
that there is nothing in regard to which’ it is
more true that ‘the best are the cheapest”
than in regardto musical instruments: A
thoreughly goodinstrument lasts a lifetime,
while an inferior ote soon gets out of order
and is worthless. info Hamlin have
their new factories in fullsoperation, aiid are
turning eut a greater amountof work than
any maker of this class of instrdments in the
country, and probably in the word. Yet
they are scarcely able to supply the demand.
This fact alone is good evidence of the
cellence of their-work. © =
