deposited in a box-out of his reach,

"Recently a large number of chicken .
roosts have beén robbed in this vicinity.
‘On “Wednesday night Cariey’s hén
house was entered and four large hens
stolen, Other theft have been com~
mitted in. different parts ofthe tewn.
The chicken ‘stealers usually make it
lively for fowls in the Spring after owners have fed thein through the Winter,
These depredations are extremely annoying, as it has become almost an ima
possibility for peoplé to raise chicken
in this locality. We hope some of these
chicken thieves may be captured.

intendent of the ‘Census of the 'tnited
States, Mr. Walker, and the latter for.
warded the following :
“The, wain reason for the difference }
between the count of this office and
that made at your office, is probably
found in the fact that we have included
many broken bands of Indians, taken
outside of the regular enumeration.
As these Indians have lost their tribal
relations, they are no longer regarded
as ‘Indians not taxed’ within the mean~

GENERAL REDINGTON.—Gen, Red»
ington, for many years business manager of the Galifornia Steam Navigation Co., since the transfer of the boats
to the California Pacific R. R. Co., has
been appointed uéanager of the river
and land transportation of the latter
company at Sacramento, ‘This ap~
pointment will be satisfactory to the
traVeling public and under thé mans
agement of General Redington the
company is sure to be prosperous. No
man, could be selected who could manage. the business so as to make the line
s0 popular with travelers. His long experience renders him entirely familiar
witht) the demands of ‘travelers and
thoroughly capable of managing a
railroad, as. he hae proved himself successful in the management of the river
transportation. The California Pa. . cific is certainly fortunate in securing
his services, ._ ;
