Paying Mines.
Aces
‘The following from the Chicago
Mining Review applies perfectly to
the condition of the mining industry
as itis in Nevada county: Many people are surprised-that there are so.
few mines paying dividencs, and often estimate the nuinberof successful
mines by the standard of dividends
alone, While the number i * divi‘dead paying mines is constantly ~ in-Ghould-be powdered and dissolved in
creasing, there is a growing tendency
to close corporatien, in which a number of parties purchase a mine and
develop its:resources for their own
tions have paid large profits to the
eome from the personal attention
given to private enterprises. All: of
the vast resources and profits of
mines worked under such management—and they are by no means iasignificantare really lost to the
credit of the mining industry, ‘and
make no showing inthe sum total of its products.
Many other mines in the first stage
of their development have paid from
their resources, for costly machinery
and other improvements which are
-valuable,.and should count—as a-partof the wealth produced, Thus it
will be seen that onc mines should be
eredited with a better showing than
can be obtained from dividends paid
to stockholders,

Tent and Purdon’s grade, and these
~much traveled thoroughfares are now
announced by freighters to be in firstclass condition. “The rapidity and

be the right man in the right place.
He has had many difliculties to combat with since coming into office, but
is’ successfully overeoming all of
them, and it is believed he will prove
himself one of the best Supervisors
and Road Commissioners the towiship has ever had. He is a man of
few words, to be sure, but his acts

Tre New York World tells of a
young woman, now in Montana, who
was adored at sixteen by a young
man who was disliked by her parents.
She reciprocated the tender feeling,
but was an aifecionate daughter and
would not marry him. But she
sternly resolved to let them know
that she was a blighted being. ~ She
continued to liye with her father
and mother, but never spoke again.
She is thigty-one now, but is still as
dumb.asan oyster. Most practical
people will conclude that there is

‘You-are right,’ answered Mr. Booth;
