OLR HE LE GN TOI 2 patna pation en Sets eh Soe geet GIA he Daily Transcript NEVADA CITY, CAL. * Monday. ‘Augnst ) ; 1876. s ~~~ Nevada County Mines. ‘The recent decline in silver and the conseqnent deprecistion in the stock of silver thines, bas had a tendency to open the eyes of -cxpitalisis to the importauce of developing the’mines of orown State, which produce a metal that is current the ‘world over, and that never fluctua -utes in value. Theadmission of Senator Jones, too, that there are not _ten-dividend-payiig silver mines in the United States, has had the effect to take away sgreut dealof thechurm which bas heretofore: surrounded inyestmenta in silver mining. ‘The mines of Nevads have, of course, increased the weal h of the world by the bullion they have added toit. But whether they: have been a benefit to : ‘the State of California is an -open, question. Io fict, we are inclined to believe they have been an: absolate damage. Ifthere are a very few of those mines, as Senator Jones says, which have paid for opeping, it stands to reson that tho-e. who have opened them bave lost money. The eapital-used in-developing them, most of it, has come frém Cualifornia, and has thereby prevented the development of home mines The silyer of Nevada, and the Boards at San Francisco which have dealt in ° the sale of their stock, huve had the effoct to draw -a-large share of the wealth of the State tothe metropolis, and. to couceatrate it in the hands of a few individuals who seldom, if ever, invest it in the development of attracting attention, and with a reasonable ontlay of capital, anda thorvagh. development, a dozen good paying mines could be established there, This state of facts-is beginning to be realized by mez of means below, and thete is & pefsistent inquiry being made into the matter We have been informed by mining men and owners of ledges, that-4Hiere is a disposition toinvestin our miues by San Franciscans, and that letters-are received here every day, asking questions gbout the mines. Several capitalists have Of late visited'there, with a view to engage in mioing, and more will come soon, Oar advice to every man-who ha’ an undeveloped mining claim,-is-tu-go towork npon it-and get-it-teady-for inspection. Your interests—will be valuable ere long. The mines of Nevada county have for a long time been classed by. the ignorant. with the mives°of other mining counties of the State, where that interest has been steadily on the decline for years. But when tie spot is visited und when it is found that these who are engaged in the’ business are all prospering; and new aud valuable mines are yearly being opened; when it is found that the towus here are prospering, and are in as good shape us any'in the-State, people -open their eyes ard wouder they ‘have so long been deeeived. All we ask of capitalists’ or representatives: of the hewspuper préss, who think this’ county is like a dozen otber decayinz mining sections, is to come and beconvinced of their error. Our mines never Jooked better, and the prospect of an_early opening of bundruids of untouchedNedges, was-never 8) flitteringas now. ‘Phere is no discount on the bullion prodaced here, atid there is no ffactuation i home mines or other resources of the State. Nevada county mives have furnished millions of , dollars for this purpose. The money was taken out here, packed away tobe invested elsewuere, and in consequence ‘the thousa' d undeveloped leads here have been allowed to remain in their native state for want of capital to open them. — Those which have been worked. bave, as’ a the value of the mines, Capitalists can put in their money in legitimate enterprises here, with all the chances in their favor for receiving a fair compensation therefor, Our County School Saperintendent, 7 Sound Old-Time Views, When Daniel Webster was Secretary of State and Mr, Harrison was President, a circular writtev by Mr. Webster.at the Pre-ident’s direction was sent to the heads of the Guvernment departments in which was the following direction: : ‘It is bot intended that any offeer-sbull be restrained in the free aud proper expression and mainteuance of bis opinions respecting pubhemen or publ c nieasures, or in the exercise to the fullest degree of the Constitutional right of suffrage. But persons employed Government and paid for-their—services out of the public tredsury are not expected totuke an active or \officious part in attempts to influence the-minds-orVotes of “Others, sich conduct being deemed inconsistent and the duties of public ayeuts acting uider it; and the Presideit is resulved, so far as depends himself, that; while the exercise of the elective franchise by the people shall be free from uodue influence of official station and authority, opiviou slail also be fiee amovg tue officers and agents of the Giverument. — Tex stallion “Smuggler’’ ‘is. now a famous borse. -The Turf Field and Farm recently said--of hius: He is niore steady’ this year than ever before. He does not get. tangled and. make those demoralizing. breaks which rendered-hitm a failurein the circuit cantpaign of “1874. The heavy shoes ov his fore feet have been replaced by lighter ones, and he seems to like the change. “At least with the light weights be mani fests_less disposition to pxce than he did when euch of hisfore feet was louded with two pounds of iron. That+‘Smuggler”’ is_a_preat—horse none willattemptto deny. Heisa zonverted pacer, and therefore lubors under disadvantages which others Diora fortunate do not have to contend with, His early life was passed it obscurity, and his early work was of a taenial kind. Lawson Tart, in a receut paper before the Birmingham Natural History and Microscopical Society, on ‘‘Manx Cats; the breed oftuilles The San Juan Times p2ys. the following well merited eompliment: ‘Nevada county can boast of having one of the very best, County Scboul rule, paid liberally for the outlay put upon them. A wine here which will not pay from the grass roots ‘down is seldom worked for more thana few months. Most of the ‘mines of Virgiuia have becn worked for years by means of heavy assessments when there was not a ghost of a show for their ever returning a dollar in dividends. We venture to say that nine ledges out ef ten ia thos county, if similurly operated 1 pon, would develup into tirst-class, mines. When it happens that the local press of the county cunreport progress upon the 1,700 foct levels of most of our mines, as it is done in Virginia City,'and then the charge that there are not teh mines in the county that will not p»y, we will advise capitalists ‘to pull out their money and a is the case: “The mining prospect here’ never looked better than it does to-day. There are miles of aurifcy. ous gravel beds which ‘have never: «been touched, and which are hi ‘ continuation of mines known. to-be rich, All that is wanted 4s capita and enterprise’ to open them, and of gold. There are quartz veins by the score here which only await the opening to pay a rich reward for in—____._vestmebtin them. In Grass Valley township uew. discoveries —arequently made, and the quartz interest never promised aswell. In this district the mines in operation are payivg regularly, and proving of greater value the deeper work is done onthem. ‘There is a great deal of prospecting going on with gratifying results. There.is a niile of the ledge on which the Provide:.ce and Sofgs mine is located which has never been worked, and there is little doubt but a dozen minewus good asx they are can be opened if eapical wouldcome to tlie rescue. Inu Washivgton township there has been some very ‘rich developmente made during the past two yeurs, _ ly by the Colemans~bas been opened daring, that time, and an offer of $225,000 was recen:ly refused four it, aod double the amount would ulso be refused. The district is ful of ledges supposed by good judges to be equally as good as that one, Experienced miners are of tha opinion, that that “Township iw to. day the most promising field on the Coast. In Kureka townthip the quirtz mings are again abandon the field, But thecontrazy’ they will send forth a steady stream . i Superintendents in this state, Before the election lust fall we stated that. the defeat of Mr. Preston would bea calamity.” The people agreed with us Jn sentiment aud elected He haa, since he bas been in office, brought order out of chaos.
