NEV VADs CITY, CALIFORNIA.
“LOCAL INTELLIGENCE, ig
PANTICULARS or CAIN’ 8 DeaTH.—A
private letter received in this city from
W: H. H. Coffman, gives full particu~
lars of the suicide of George W. Cain.
It appeara that Coffman, having receivure, met him on the cars. Cain shook
to see Sam. Batler, and would go back
to Nevada the next day. Coffman
showed him the dispatch about the
balance due on the note, and Cain said
he had paid the money, and offered to
telegraph back to prove it. Cain said
he had deposited the money in the]
hotel safe. Dispatches were seit end
paid; but that Cain had part of the
money on deposit. He said he had not
do so.as soon as le returned, and then
telegraphed to parties to go his secur—
ity. After.receiving answers that they
would not he appeared depressed, and
asked Coffman what he would do about
it. Coffman replied that he did not
know that he could do anything, but if
he, Cain, was the man he took him to
be, he. would come cut -— pay .it like
a man.
Coffman was then called away, and
when he returned Cain was gone. Sup~
posing he had gote to the next station
to take the freight train, Coffman got
on and went to Elko, where he next
morning received a dispatch announcing the finding of the body. The letter
says: “It’appears he went to the river
a half mile distant, where he was seen
afterwards lying down and naked, by a
man who supposed he had been bathing.
The next morning, three men who went
bathing found his clothing, and with
them an envelope, ‘on the back of which
was-written: “Tell‘Dr. Thomas of my,
fate.” . Canse—tired of life,” and also a
few lines requesting a gentleman in Nevada te 0. -his security, stating he
would make. it all right.” His railroad
ticket, which he had torn up, was for
Promontory, and be only had $7,50 in
money on his person. His body was
found about one hundred yards below
his, clothes and a handkerchief so tied
on one hand as to Jead to the belief that
he tied his hands together but freed one
in hie struggling. Mr, Coffman atten-~
ded to his funeral and had been buried
in the Curlin Cemetery.
Letters upon-his person showed that
he had a mother and father living in
New London, Huron Co., Ohio, and that
he was engaged to a lady in that place.
He had-also several letters from Dr.
Thomas, of San Francisco. The writer
thinks that the young man had some
greater:trouble than his debts, which
caused him to take his own life.
Frit THE Hovuse.—To-morrow night
the celebrated-Murphy & Mack’s Minstrels, who have filled extended engagements in the cities and larger
towns of.the State, will appear at the
Theatre-in this city. ‘They have everywhere been greeted with crowded
houses, and the characterof their per~
formances i6: proneuaced superior to
that of.any troupe of minstrels who
have before appeared in the mountains.
The pames of the artists are separate
but emphatic guarantees of the excellence of their entertainments. The
orchestra .is under the direction of
Schreiner. Reserved geats may be secured of W.H. Davidson, to-day. Fill
the house.
