"There are some strong men on it,but ‘there are several very weak ones. . . “There are men on that ticket who -ean easily be beaten if better men sare put against them to-morrow. “The Democracy had good men seekJing every position it had to fill, but policy dictated, and in many cases peorer men wereselected. It is useless to talk of putting up omly the ‘best men, when conventiens will set ‘ability and fitness aside, and put forward inability and unfitness. It #as If the party canstandit wecan. In the front of the stand, above the speaker, was the Emancipation Proclamation of Abraham Lincoln. Flags hung in folds areund it and in otber parts of the stage. Beautiful boquets of flowers adorned the stand in different places. The number of ladies pres-eut at the speaking was very large. The speech lasted nearly three hours and it was listened to with marked -attention from beginning to end, Grass Valley turned out a large delegation, and when they came in town -it reminded one of former campaigns when enthusiasm was the rule. ‘There was certainly more of it disthan wehave seen this season. A few more such meetings, (and we shall have one of them to-morrow night) will prove that the Republi-cans are a very numerous lot of indi‘viduals. The chances of the party ‘electing the whole county ticket are wery flattering. played at Sargent’s two meetings, > om The Democratic Ticket. “We gave in our last issue a majoriity ef the ticket nominated by the Democratic County Convention on ‘Saturday last. Grass Vatuey, August 6th, 1875.GENTLEMEN: —Your very kind letter was handed to me on my atrivul here to-day, and is another evidence, of which there have been so many, of the regard and confidence of my fellow citizens of Nevada County. I feel very proud of your endorsement and commendatior, coming from those who have intimately and whose interests are so directly involved in meusures of legislation which I have promoted, that, better than most of my constituents, you know the difficulties in tue way of satisfactory results, that legislation was needed and is beneficial. I know, from testimonials from the mining States and Territories generally, that the mining laws of 1870 and 1872 have been gladly hailed as giving necessary relief to those eng: ged in a great business interest. But no approval could be more intelligent-or-concla-4 sive than that of the principal miners .of this county, irrespective of party, whose names are signed to your letter, In the anxious and difficult progress of legislation, I often’ received valuable suggestions from some of the gentlemen whose-names are signed to this papes;.and owe to that fact largely the success of an experiment that changed the ‘shot gun-title’’ ofminers to afee, made mining investments safe, ‘mining more stable, and tended to make our mining population less nomadic and unseitied. I take great pleasure in accepting your generous invitation, and subscribe myself, with much respect, Truly Yours, A, A. Sancent. To Wa. Warr and others, Card ef Thanks. The ladies desire to express their thanks to Professor Muller, Mrs. M. S.
