_LOSAL ITems.
Frait Shipments,
‘Grass Valley, has shipped a considerable
quantity of fruit to Denver. Last year he
sent fruitof all kinds, packing it well, so
‘it arrived in good condition. He has sent
so far this season nothing but apples, but
will send grapes and other fruits in “the .
Fall, We understand that he has made a
good profit, which is perhaps mainly due
to the care he has taken in packing the
_ fruit seas to avoidloss. The towns along
the Pacific Railroad are all growing, if not
rapidly, at least fast enough to consume all
thesurplus fruit in the mountains within
a reasonable distance of the road. Winter
apples are the most profitable, and the best
qualities of these are grown in the higher
altitudes—say between 2,500 and 3,500 feet.
There is no necessity for allowing fruit. to
roton the ground,’ as has frequently been
done in this county; there will always be a
market for it in the mountain region to the
east, aiid facilities for. shipping will improve as the production increases.
An Unfortunate Speculation.
‘The Grass Valley Union complains
of a Nevada paper, for announcing,
that in consequence of the’ burning of
the snow sheds; the’supply of ice would
be cat off. On that hint, a Grass Valley speculator: telegraphed for two
tone, which cost him five cents a pound.
But it seems, the: regular supply continued atiGrass Valley, and he lost two
and‘a half cents & pound, on his ice.
~The operator evidently is not-qualified
fora successful speculator ; if he pos“sesses the nerve'to invest, he lacks the
__-energy.to carry.his plans through suc, . .
cessfully.. As.a matter of fact the supply wiis cut off at Nevada, and for two
days no ice was to be had in’ town.
Had the Grass Valley man brought his
ice here, he might readily have disposed ‘of the two tons at a handsome
advance. A speculator must have his
eyes open, and keep posted on the state
of the markets, ee he would. win.

An item in the TRANSORIPT a day or
two ago, suggesting that the extraordinary ‘heat of this Summer is caused
by ‘the solar system sepproaching a
warmer region in space, appears to have
greatly affected the local of our Main
‘street neighbor. He svems to imagine
that we intended the item especially
for his benefit. Far from it, We had
no reference to his drifting toward the
place the good book speaks about in
divers and sundry places. If he com‘plains of the heat now, what will be}.
his “feelinks,” unless he changes his
‘ways, when he has shuffled off this

you may reach that, place for which we

On the receipt of information Tuesday of the death of Tim Scantlin, complaint was mode before Justice Caldwell charging Cuvilla with murder, and

South Yuba Gravel Company.
The claims of this company, located
enly a few weeks ago, are situated
about @ mile above the Central House,
and on the South Yuba side ofthe ridge.
They have had men at work on the
ground, who have a.tunnel in some
distance, which is run around on the
rim Tock, 6ne sidé of the tunnel being
in gravel. “We learn that this gravel
prospects feniarkably well, according
to some-accounts averaging twe bits to
the pan, and the gold is mostly coarse.
The company held'‘a meeting on Tuesday evening, and resolved to incorporate, believing this to be the best course
to pursue in opening the ground. It is
their intention to put up hydraulic
works, and have everything ready for
operation the coming season.

It appears that a mushroom growth of so
called “Bitters,” is springing up under different names. in. varions localities, particularly in the Southern and Western States,
which the venders have the hardihood to
recommend to eaey-goiag people upon whom
they think they’ can impose, as' a substitute
for Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters, long recognized by every class.as the purest and best
medicated stimulant and invigorant the
worldaffords.
The concoctions referred to: being composed of worthless material offer a larger margin for profit than that Celebrated Tonic, and
hence the anxiety of dollar worshiping dealers to foist them upon the public in its place.

The great popularity and vast sales of Hostetter’s Bitters, can ngt, of course,be seriously impaired by these “tricks of the trade, "but
as the debilitated and suffering have a direct:
