we find Greeley sending secret circu:

states in which he attempted to procure the withdrawal of Limccin asa

some other man. These facts in relation. to Greeley's course are proved
by his own letters and the public
documents, authority whivh tliere is

erratic, easily flattered, and entirely
unfit to be trusted in the -administration of the. Government. Under

Who Made The ‘‘Bleody Chasm?”
“Clasping lands across the bloody
chasm” has become a sort ofa pet
phrase with Democrats, simply be-:
cause Greeley first gave it utterance.
Republicans desire to fill up the.
Johnny Lamertine, mare ‘Sallie’.
This purse was for $10, the riders
being changed by the judges, and the
last horse out to win the purse. Horace Greeley’ behaved badly from
the start, requiring two or three aids
to get him to the score. The start
was good, the three horses getting
off well together, and Horace trailing
in the rear, his rider whipping him
across the shoulders, as the animal
objected to any other urging, and
was soon.out of the race. ‘‘Sallie’’
came ‘in first, mule second, and
When the ‘last . ’
horse crossed the score Greeley had
just reached the half-mile pode, aud
he came in in about 7) minutes.
The judges declared that the thing
was ‘‘put up,” but the owner offered
to bet $250 that no man on the
ground couldtake’ Greeley”and make
better time than he did in the race.

old Horace merely wants to shake

Lewiston (Me.) Journal has this
gentle reminder: They forgot to
add that the said “‘bloody chasm”’
was their own work. But for their
moral madness ‘there would have
been no war. It is kind in them,
nevertheless, that they should be
ready to ay they are willing to forgive the North for doing what they
did themselves, provided the North
would send to the rear Grant
and other reminders of Union triwmphs, and let Jeff. Davis and
his friends to come back to Congress
and rule the Nation. -How kind this
is! We think we see a general hand
