DIO LEWYS’ SUNDAY LECTURE;
The Congregational Church was
_— }erowded Sunday.night, with an audience that had assembled to hear
Dr, Dio Lewis tell what he Knew,
or thought he knew,of the “Duties of
Christian Women Tn the Temperance
Cause.” Most. of cur readers are acquainted with the history of this
famed reformer’s career, as they are
with the effective style of his delivery!
For a quarter of a. century or more
the one aimof bis existénce has been
to array his well trained voice and
ready tongue against. intemperance.
This antagonism is uot evinced alone
toward, intoxicating liquors, but ex~
tends to. the use of tobacco, vulgarity.
—it Loe rear: of Elis’ saloon, inthe
town of Eureka, whieh in’ spite of
the most beroic efforts on the part
of the citizens,
every business building in the place,
together with their contents, were
destroyed, Itis supposed to have
been the devilish work of an. incendiary who had raised_an unlocked
window opening into the card room,
“sand tossed in upon: the floor burning and-~highly inflammable material, possibly a. fire-ball. The first
’knowledgé of the fire was gained by
“twotmen who slept in an adjoining
butcher shop, and who were awak~ened from their slumbers by the
fierce heat that burst from the rear
part of the saloou, and beat against
the building they were in, ‘These

such a headway, however, owing to
_ the dried-out condition of the .tim~ bers in the buildings, that it was al_ready beyond control, Fron _
starting place the fre went raging
down the main street, sweeping
away Robb’s Hotel, a vacant 2-story
dwelling house, Gus: Rohrig’s store,
a dwelling house formerly owned
by Jobri B. Cont and occupied ‘by
George Rooker. In the opposite dlrection, up the street from the saloon, the butcher shop of Helwig &
Burrows, John H. Young, Jr.’s liv_ery stable, John Eagan’s saloon, Bas
hannan’s barn and Murphy's saloon, were all totally destreyed.—
The flames leaped across the street
to the north side, and destroyed Bo~Tiannan’s store, Dan. MeCarthy’s
Hotel, the dwelling house of John
Cline,a blacksmith shop formerly
owned by Mr. Clark, and the residence now belonging to and occupied by him.
“Fhus-about half of the number of
buildings in the town were.consumed, and they represented the most
valuable portion of it,by far. Scarcely any of the contents of the buildings were saved, so rapidly did the
flames rush from one to the other
An incredibly short space of time
elapsed between the first alarm and
the burning of the last store. Mr.
McCarthy had barely time to escape
from his hotel before the walls fell
in, and he did not even stop: to put
on his pants.
The carriages and‘horses in Mr.
‘Young's livery stable were gotten
out, Bohannan managed to save a
single smajl wagon load of goods
from bis store, and the safe at the
buteher shop was rolled into the
middle of the road, before the flames
prevented it, With these exceptions, we cannot learn that a cent’s
worth of property was axved, ‘There
Was no inewranee on any of the buildings or comtents, and. the loss will
not be far from$50,000. Mr. Bohannay ie nouch the kevajest loser.
There can be no doubt that
_an incendiary is responsible for the
damage, the eitizens et Eureka seem
to think. There had beva no fire
in Ellis’ saieen for several months
and the lights were-extinguished ev
