SENSATIONAL. —We learn that the project
is seriously discussed by some gentlemen
we wot of, who have money, leisure, spirit
and knowledge necvssnry to the business,
of fitting out a SHivateer or two to prey
upon the commerce of England tn case of a
Tupture between that country and Japan.—
The gentlemen, in their secret discussions:
we understand, deent themselves not only
invited to do so by the precedent set by
England in fitting out privateers for the
rebels. The plan so—fat discussed, we are
privately informed, i¢ to obtain a soon
as possible letters of marque from the
Japanese gevernment sod immediately
put two or more fleet veseelt well armed on
the track of British vessels. The British
bave so much shipping om the Pacific that
not a doubt is entertained that the business will pay as well as the Comstock ledge
and affurd much more excitement and aay

on their well known batred to the English; and.thus make enemies of the Administration useful to it in several respects.

Tne Inish—WHAT DO THEY MEAN !—
If there is one darling wish the Irish ea».
rtaln fo¥ the Emerald Isle it is that may
iidependent of English rule and its old
bannets of the, nations of the earth. The
Irish sigh for the day When the sword of
Breffni was a terror to foes; and lament
Tara’s mouldered walls. What would not a
true Irishman do to remové the yoke of
English servitude from the land of his fath~
érs? “What Trish soul is not stirred to. its
central fountains at the recollection of Irieh
wrongs, Irish suffering, trish eadurancé ?1—
When he casts a look back upon that gem
of the wave, the home of his ancestors and
the grave of his race, and sees old men,
young men, and even children too, falling
dead for the want of food, in a land among
the most productive on earth, but robbed
of the fruits of the soil by English aristocrate and landholders, how great is hia indignation, how compassionate is his heart, how
resolute is hisdetermination, how sacred
is his vow that all these wrongs must end!
‘Where is the arm that dares bare itself
for the oppressed of other lands? Where
is the sword that waves. and flashes and
descends for freedom and for man! The
Irish must look for these in vain in ether
lands but ours. American institutions must
break the sceptre of Britain. American
granaries must furnish the supplies in a war
for Irish independence. American armories
must substitute more deadly weapons, than
the pike and the scythe. American mines:
must yield the gold to re-establish *the*T?ish
government; and American ships must bear
the sinews of war to theIrish coast and
stand &s guardian angels around the island
till the beatified form of. Liberty appears. ~
~ “But, look! the Irishmen of America wouldbe the purricides of both native and adopted
country. Ina great struggle in which free
institutions are involved, the Irish, unwit~
tingly it must be, thruw their influence
against the Government and the people who
are defending the right. They offer comfort to despotism and dishearten the friends
of human liberty. What benefit can they
derive from giving hope to the South?
What are they to expect in future for them~
selves or their native country from that quarter? Whatsort of an asylum or field for
frée labor have the slave States ever pre,
sented? What food can they furnish to
starving Ireland? What ships have they to
bear salvation of life and liberty to the suffering island.t What sympathy has-South»
J ern slavehulders for oppression, when they
are the advocates of the rightof oppression?
It is the maritime, the commercial people
ofthe United States, it is the freedom-loving, the laboring States of our country where
there is the sou! to feel for the suffering of
tho oppressed, and where there 1s the spirit
and the ready hand to assist. Nut in the
South where men are rendered cold and cal
lous to the claims of humanity by familiarity
with scenes of oppression and violence can
Irishmen look for material or moral aid in
time of need. Yet, politically they strength.
en the hand of the oppressor. They come
to Anverica with a hatred of aristocrats, and
yet assist to build up.on American soil amore
grinding, more odious, more God«cursed aristoctacy than that of Britain.
What will be the effect? The great heart
of America; the loyal heart that has always
sympathized with the suffering Irish,-which
has seut provisioned ships across the deep
to feed. fhe famighing poor, and subscribed
hundteds of thousands to Irish leagues, is
pained and is forced to say: See here; our
sympathies afa to some extent misplaced.
‘These mon ate not fit to enjoy democratic
liberty. They are incapable of self-government: They cannot appreciate the blessings
of liberty: They cripplea freogovernment
here ina gheat struggle for self preservation. If they, through ignorance 6? otherwise, would strengthen a cause to which the
oppression of England is but love in comparisun, what would Ireland be but a Pandes
monium; a Hell, if Englidh restraint were
removed atid the Irish race left to govern
itself?
Such is the reasoning that the conduct of
the Irish in supporting Jeff. Davis’ allies iv
the North forces upon. us,and it is legitimate,
Whére is Ireland’s hope unless these things
are changed? If Irishmen, after they bave
tasted the fruits of pertect freedom in America, after they have seen and understood the
practical workings of our institutions, are not
capable of a iating the blessings th
furnish, what folly Svestie

on men of Tennessee are becoming radical.
Their organ, the Nashville Union, says:
The path to safe and enduring peace for
Tennessee lies straight through the com<
plete destruction of slavery. To dally and
tamper with conservatism or pro-slaveryism
will surely involve her in still greater trous
ble and difficulty. If she wishes to obtain
happiness she must first be just. She cannot, at this day, expect to enjoy her own
tights while she cruelly and dishonestly dis«
regards and withholds the inalienable rights
of others. And. we are pleased to know
that thousands of her citizens are warmly
in favor of the removal of slavery, and that
their ranks are continually recruiting. All
see the astonishing change which is coming
over the people on this question.
