SATURDAY MORNING AUGUST 15th
the stump here, that Owen, of Santa Clara
remarked in the Legislature last winter.that
there was'® colored man in his county, who
was equal im intellect and morals to twothirds of the members of the House, and that
veaid Owen was applauded for the sentiment
Old Joha lied smartly about this. J. Ww.
Owen said it, and J. J. Owen was reneminated. The idea of negro equality was. John’s
theme, and he wanted to prove it was entertained by the Union party, and so confounded the two Owens for hie purpose. 3
Ee"The Grass Valley National has several cock-and-bull stories about riotous proceedings at the John Bigliar meeting here.
It’s all right, Br. Byrne. Say what you
please about it, you can’t begin to lie as treely as John did. It ain't in you to do it.—
Nevertheless that letter written from Nevada, and your embellishments, were pretty
well along on Joba's track, Br, Byrne. They
were, that’s. fact. Scareely any truth in
them, ‘pon honor. ’Taint your fault; been
fooled, that’s all. <
MeetiNnG TO-NIGHT.—Bear in mind,
brethren of the Union party, and all-citizens
who love truth and justice, that speaking
upon the momentous questions of the day-'
will be had to-night from the Union stand.—
We'll warrant the:speaking to be first rate
Tura out, boys!
Fast Drivine over Bringes:—We are
requested to say that fast driving ever our
bridges has.got to cease. The Marshal has
imperative orders to arrest every man riding
or driving faster than.a walk on the bridgés
over Deer Creek, and the orders will be
executed to the letter. There has been
considerable laxity of late, and the evil effects
are felt on the bridges. A new order of
things must be inaugurated.
*Ciry Taxes.—The Board of City Trus«
tees has ordered tie collection of one dollar
poll tax from every voter in the corporate
limits of the city. The city Assessor is about
ready to begin his rounds again. The prop:
erty tax this year will be the same as last—
one half of one per cent. :
BanJuisM.—The greatest banjoist that
has ever visited the coast, Sam: Pride, will
giye a concert to-night at the theatre. He
plays on any thing, imitates every thing,
and sings anything, and makes, alone as he
is, enough noise fora whole band. He gives
4.most capital concert, so they say. -Go and
hearhim. Price 50 cents.
COMING, AND A PAIR OF THEM.—Henry :
Mackie, banker of this phice, telegraphs that
he leaves New York for California, with wife,
on the 24th.
a
.REMOVAL,—Jas. B. Jeffery has moved
his stock of wines, liquors, cigars, &c., to
new place on Pine Street, next door to Cheap
John’s clothing establishment.
BulLine Seuines.—The Esmeralda Star,
ina notice of the new road from Aurora to
Svnora, has the following reference « natural
bee oy,
The Boiling Springs are among the great
est curiosities to be found in the State. They
are situated about 64 miles west of Aurora,
atthe opening of a lovely and picturesque
valley; the hills heing thickly covered with
sugar pine and the grass in the valley being
_ nearly two feet high on an average. The
springs cover a space of about fifty feet in
diameter, and are about eighteen inches in
. depth ; the water is. boiling hot, and will
boil an egg -hard in four minutes. There is
_ «8 fine spring of culd water in close proximi_ ty and as clear as crystal.
passes immediately by the Boiling Springs, a
house has been erected for the
water is highly medicinal, and in many cases
has ‘been found to work a perfect cure in cas= of inflammatory rheumatism and other malies. ‘
New Pristine Macntwe.—The Londoe
correspondent of MeNivea & Cameron's’
Paper Trade Review says:
“There is an English engineer of the name
of Wilkinsen who has invented a machine
for the printing of newspapers which com<
pletely surpasses Hoe's machine in respect
