Gazette tells us that horse thieves, burglars and other wick ed men are confined in the county jail. The most depraved” specimen among the jail birds is a fellow charged with whipping his ‘us wife. He-is sunk so deep in infamy that extreme measures had to be resorted to. He was recently tried for the offence. The belter organ says; “The sentence of the court was that the prisoner be compelled to read the DatLy TRanscripr for four weeks.” The Gazette forgot to say that the prisoner's deptavity was caused by reading Sears’ paper and that the court passed sentence with a view to his reform. We understand. that the Gazette isa great favorite with criminals and jail birds, and that such fellows con? _ sider it no punishinont to-read it. ‘The tone of that organ’ is in keeping withthe tastes of such a crew.) , ‘ THE RACEs,—One week from hext Thureday the Fall meeting of the Glenbrook Park . 5 will commence The purses are offered for trotting and pacing. Rich Lepee.~The Wisconsin Ledge, in the Excelsior District, proves that the mines in that section are valuable. Sixty dollars in gold was recently cleaned up from three pans of decomposed rock, and in one day seven ounces’ were taken out by one man in a hand mortar. The lucky owners of the ledge have a fortune sure. THE THeEatTER.—The new theater will soon be finished-and ready for use. <A contract has been let to Mr; Campbell, the artist who painted the panorama of Washoe and’ California.
