No PUNISHMENT.—The . Gazette tells us
that horse thieves, burglars and other wick
ed men are confined in the county jail. The
most depraved” specimen among the jail
birds is a fellow charged with whipping his
‘us
wife. He-is sunk so deep in infamy that
extreme measures had to be resorted to. He
was recently tried for the offence. The belter
organ says; “The sentence of the court was
that the prisoner be compelled to read the
DatLy TRanscripr for four weeks.” The
Gazette forgot to say that the prisoner's deptavity was caused by reading Sears’ paper
and that the court passed sentence with a
view to his reform. We understand. that
the Gazette isa great favorite with criminals and jail birds, and that such fellows con?
_ sider it no punishinont to-read it. ‘The tone
of that organ’ is in keeping withthe tastes
of such a crew.) , ‘
THE RACEs,—One week from hext Thureday the Fall meeting of the Glenbrook Park . 5
will commence The purses are offered for
trotting and pacing. Some splendid stock
will be on-hand and our citizens will soon
have an oppurtunity of witnessing some of
the best racing that ever came off in the
State. The grounds have been cleared and
the Park presents a beautiful Appearance.
Phe track is being sprinkled every day and
Will be ia superb condition. The best accommodations will be furnished all who at”
tend and goud order will be maintained. A
splendid stand has been erected for ladies
from which an’ excellent view of the whole
course is had. Charley Osborn has been at
great, expense and ‘trouble in fixing up the
Park and our citizens should use every effort to make the Fall meeting a great success. :
County Count, August 14th.—The PeoPlead not guilty, trial August 23d.
The People vs Ah Chee. Plead not guilty, trial August 23d.
The Yeople vs Tyrrell. Continued to . Se
The People vs Anderson, Brown and Dorsoy. Under three indictments for burglary.
Plead guilty toone indictment anda nollie
prossequi entered in the other two cases.
Wm. Jeffery and John C. Lindemeradwitted to citizenship.
Court adjourned to Saturday next at 10
o'clock. —
For Nominations —The Democrats of
Rough and Ready instructed their delegates
to go for nominations ‘first, last and all
the time. We learn that the Allison Ranch
and San Juan Democrats also are in favor
of a ticket. In this city there was no issue
and in Grass Valley the anti-nomination
party won.
Rich Lepee.~The Wisconsin Ledge,
in the Excelsior District, proves that the
mines in that section are valuable. Sixty
dollars in gold was recently cleaned up from
three pans of decomposed rock, and in one
day seven ounces’ were taken out by one
man in a hand mortar. The lucky owners
of the ledge have a fortune sure.
THE THeEatTER.—The new theater will
soon be finished-and ready for use. <A contract has been let to Mr; Campbell, the artist who painted the panorama of Washoe
and’ California. We understand that he
will commence work within a day or two.
The‘drop curtain will be finished first. The
theatre has been a long time iv the hands of
workinén and citizens will be glad to know
that there is a prospect of its being speedily
finished.
BoarpD oF EQUALIZATION.—The Board
. Of Supervisors will be in session every day
this. week from 9 o’elock, a. M. to 2 P. M. as
4 Board of Equalization. The assessment
roll may be found at the Clerk's office —
Those who feel themselves aggrieved by the
assessment must appeal to the Board.
‘Serious Actipent.—A child aged about
twelve years, son of Charles Cunstance, residing on Factory street, was thrown from
& horse on Sunday afternoon and ‘seriously
injured. Some one who had just returned
from'a ride put the boy on the horse to give ,
him a ride. The animal threw him with].
