On Sunday night last the Lodge in this city held a public installatiun, Grand Sadr, L. Elkas, Deputy Grand Saar, L. Falk and exGrand Saar, M, Wilson, of the Grand Lodge of the State were present, and conducted the ceremonies. The following gentlemen were installed as officers for the ensuing term: E. Goldsmith, President; ‘L. Hirsbman, Vice; A. Baruh,Achieser; L. W. Dreyfuss, Alitzur; B: H. Miller, Secretary; A. Blumenthal, “Treasurer; A. Rosenthal, Inside Guard; Morris. Rosenberg, High Priest. At the conclusion of the ceremonies atthe Lodge room the members and invited guests retired to Temperance Hall, where there wase splendind collation awaiting them, At nine o'clock: the dancing hall was. lighted up and a social dance was kept op uatil threeo'clock. It was attended by the elite of tha city, and all unite in pronouncing it one of the best of the season. A large number were in attendance from Grass Valley, and among these some of the most beautiful ladies of the county, Wedare not particularize, however, where all looked so weil, The managers of the whole : affair ought to feel proud of their — and we presume are proud : tion of the hers of tbe late Senator Sebastian, of Arkansas, who was expelied Jaly 11th, 1861, on the charge of disloyalty; the Commitiee siys that the cbarge of disloyalily was more 4 wialter of suspicivu a: d infereuce and was wholly uafounded in fact, and that Mr. Sebustian remained devotedly loyal to tke Uuited Stutes duriug bis life. A young man named Juhn Hammer dropped dead of heart disease at Lis residence iu this city yesterday, at hf past twelve o'clock. He was to have be n murried at half past three to M.ss Aauie Dugan, of Alexandria, aud was just abuut starting to tuke ‘the train for that city wheu so suddenly called to his fiual accoun . A singular circumstance connected wilh the sad-atfuir, is=tbat the muairiae had been ‘thrice postponed during the last ten‘days. Both Hulleck and Oitmanu have been tried once, Hulleck-veing convicted, and the jury in -Ottman’s case failing 10-agree,_Ottman has-been out on bail all the time, but Halleck bas been in jail. The evidence on both sides was clear and conclusive that Halleck bad been made # tool of by Ottwan, who first prompted -him to steal the money all in $500 bills, and give itto him to keep until is could be changed into sumuller notes, and having ence got hold of it, suupped his fiogers ut Halleck, and’ gave him asa gratuity $400. Most of the mouey in $500 bills, was found in Ottman's possession. few of them, no doubt, found their way into the pockets of some of the Jurymen who tried his case, Speaker Kerr writes tuat be is compelled to spend most of his time in bed. They invite ull the mining Superintendents aud others interested in such matters to ree and judge foc themselves, and after showing what it will do on the surface, they will have a practical workiug test of it made in any mine which may be designated, and declare they can . prove ull they claim for it. They have used it exClusively in their own mine forthe last nine months and with the uimust success and’ satis. faction. It is well worthy the at_ teution of our miving men, aud should be most critically tested upon its merits. ~~ Trade-Dollars Stiffening Up, The Virginia Chronicle says: ‘‘The trade-dollar, which forsome weeks has been an outcast in the financial world—a veritable vagubond, kicked from pillar to post, aud beguing for recognition bat now ina fair way of recovering its proper status.. The fact of the muatter is, that the ostentatious “‘trade’’ assumed rather too much importance at the start. It proclaimed itself worth 104 cents, traveled oa itsshupe qnoted itself at a premium, and wanted to be cock of the walk. Of course, the halfs, quarters and dimes, which had done good service for years, didu’t like to be trampled under foot by’ the bloated newcomer,” and accordingly combined against it and banished it to the society ot gamblers and Chinamen, Finally, Jim Ocudortf fixed its value at 87% cents, aud tuen knocked it down tu 75 cents at his keao game. But in spite of all its rough treatment, the “trade” is coming to the frout again and will in a few weeks be strutting about as large as ever. It is commundiug a higher price every day; and San Francise» brokers are buying up trades here by the thousands, Boys va, Chinamen, Within the next few days five bundred boys will leave San Francisco for San Joaquin county, where they will take the place of Cbinamen who have hitherto done the hop-picking in that district. Their fure to their destination is to be advanced, and they wil rec ive from $15 to $25 per month, wick good board and lodging. and kind treatment. This is a very clear indication of the] strength of public vpinion in this
State. Should farmers generally discard their Chinese help and give the boys a <bance, the hoodiam element would soon cease troubling nrunicipal authorities. fiudiug none—is . Geu Thowas 1%.
