PIxLey's Lecrure.—One of the largest
audiences wé have seen assembled in this
city for a long time, listened to the lecture
night. The lecture was a masterly production, delivered in a clear, fyll voice, and was
listened to with the greatest attention by:
the assemblage. Were it possible to do justice-to Pixley, our limited ‘@pace prevents
an extended notice of the lecture. It'wasa
faith{ul aud forcible narrative of what the
Jeeturer saw and heard when with. the great
Union army iw Virginia. His illustrations
are puloted and his character pictures so
true to the subject that when he drows the
character of Grant, Meade, Hancuck, Smith
and others of the army, their presence is almost felt, Pixley isa man of close observation and deep penetration. He states that
the best feeling existe between the suldiers
of the two armies when not io couflict, and
draws from this the conclusion that when
the war. is over they will son fraternize,—
He places unlimited confidence in Grant.and

BRoke JauL—On Sunday evening last,
Jobn Brandon, who was awaiting trial upon
the charge of highway robbery, succeeded,
with the assistance of a confederate on the
ouside, in raking his escape from the city
jail. ‘The prisoaers of the county have been
confined in the city calaboose, since the fire.
The escape was effected between 6 and 7
o'clock in the evening. A crowbar was taken from the passage in front of the jail, and
in order to procure it the party had to enter
City Hall, on Broad street. The iron window grating, on the side of the jail, was pried
off from the outside. That .part of the job*
required considerable work as evidenced by
the indentations made on the frame work.
Brandon was heavily ironed. © These were
cut with a case knife which was found after
the escape. It is surprising that the party
engaged in opening the window wasnot seen
by some one passing to and fro on euch a
public street. Two Chinamen also left their
bed and board and are probably in het pursuit of Brandon. One of them was spending @ season at the jail for stealing some
knives from the eture of Eugene Scolari, and
the other was supposed to be insane from
the fact that he set his own house on fire, at
Grass Valley, Brandon was said to be a dea
serter from the army.
CONDITION oF Sam. LaneTon. —From
A. Mulloy, agent of Langton’s Express ia
this city, we obtain. the particulars.of the
aceident by which Mr. Langton lost a limb,
wes run into by # large, freight wagon. The
sulky was crashed and Mr. Langton thrown
under the wagon, the wheele of which passed
over his leg. The limb wns amputated
near the thigh. A dispatch was received
ed internal injuries which will probably
cause his death. Mr. Langton has been
very unfortunate. He has been twice burncently robbed of a considerable amount, snd
several years since-he lost a large emount of
money by a swindling partner. We hope
his injuries are not so serious as reported.
