“LOCAL AFFAIRS.
To Correspondents.
We received a day or two ago, a
very long communication from a gentleman at North Bloomfield, giviug
us an amusing history of the Democratic meeting held there last week.
It is entirely too long for our-colums. We would gladly publish it if
we had room, for it contains many
good hits. We also have received
many dthers written within a few
days past, which we have to decline
for the same reason. We assure our
correspondents that we will do our
part faithfully towards keeping the
Democracy in their proper places,
and illiminate them from time to
time. The accounts of their late
“circus’’ which we have received
places them in no enviable light, and
has added many new members to the
Republican party.
“Wirg characteristic distortion
the Broad street concern denominates
a little of our good humor as blackguardism.’’—(uzette.
We might reply with equal propriety by calling your institution a
“rebel sheet pablished’ on Main
street and edited by a Yankee, ’’ but
we dont use such style of argument,
therefore wont say it. But the ‘‘good
humor” you speak of will admit of
nothing but a mis-statement, to use a
very mild term, for mildness, you
“know, is our peculiar characteristic.
You said the Booth Rangers turned
out with 36 boys, 20 men and 15 negroes, when there were just 156 white
men, and you knew it. That was
very ‘‘high”’ for ‘good humor.”” You
called the editor of this paper a
“Chinese Mandarin,’’ as vile-a name
as you could think of. Was that
‘good humor?’ If it was, it is the
same humor that is appreciated only . .
in a billingsgate fishmarket and not
“among gentlemer. “We have no desire to wage a war of words with our
neighbor, and will not if we can
avoid it; and therefore will accept
his apology. ae

d a Presentation. =‘ On Monday night last, the fire
boys of this city had quite a jollification at No. 2’s house, over the presentation of a beautiful trumpet by
the Hon. James Phelan of Virginia
City, to C. W. Cornell, Chief Enginéer, for the use of the Fire Department. The affair was animpromptu
one, aS Mr. Phelan only arrived in
the city at a late hour in the evening.
About forty or fifty members of the
Department were present, as well as
@ number of our most prominent. citizens, among whom we recognized
the tall form and amiable faee of our
present Sheriff. The Band, that discoursed such exquisite music for the
“cireus’’ was in attendance, having
volunteered for the occasion, and
during the evening animated the
‘boys by playing some soul cheering
airs. Wine and edibles were in
abundance, and everybody who
would, was invited to partake.
Senator Phelan made quite a handsomé speech of presenting the trumpet, in which he gave its history.
The trumpet was received by Mr.
Cornell, who made a few appropriate
vemarks in reply to Mr. Phelan. The
boys cheered, the Band played, and
the meeting broke up with three
cheers and a tiger for Senator Phelan.

Some
time since, mercury, in the disguise of pills,
powders, &c., was given for all diseases of
the stomech and liver, while-quinine was
freely administered for the chiNs. At
length Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters made its
advent, and an entire new system of healing
was inaugurated. The beneficial effects of
this valuable preparation were at once
acknowledged, and mineral poisons suffered
to sink into that obscurity to which an
enlightened age has consigned them. There
have been’ many spurious bitters palmed
upon the community, which, after trial,
have been found utterly worthless, while
Hostetter’s has proved a blessing to thousands, who owe to it their restoration to
health.
For many years we have watched the:
steady progress of Hostetter’s Stomach
Bitters in public estimation, and its benificent effects as a cure for all complaints
arising from the stomach of a morbid
nature, and we are free to say that it can be
relied upon as a certain relief and remedy.
Its proprietors have made the above preparation, after years of careful study and sitting, and are now reaping the reward claimed by this valuable speciac, and which they
so richly merit. Itis the only preparation
of the kind that is reliable in ali cases, and
it therefore demands the attention of the
afflicted.
