NEVADA CITY, CAL.
--LOCAL AFFAIRS,
North Bloomflela 5
North Bléomfield is now a lively
mining camp. The North Bloomfield Company is employing a large
number of met, and on Weduesday
the first of their eight or nine hoisting works on the line of their tunnel
wis started up at shaft: No. a."
new hotel has been recently “opened
“for the accomodation of the men em.
ployed by the company. The hoisting. works will be rum by hurdy gurdy wheels, and in the eight shafts,
nel from sixteen faces: When their
~ ground, ameunting to nearly 1,500
actes, and ruuning some 2,000 feet
upon a channel of grent width from
which they took out over $30,000 in
“prospecting by drifting, is opened,
the company will have one of the
richest gravel mines in the country,
and will be amply. repaid for their
large investments made by them fh
this county.
Suicide of George Downey.
_A dispatch received from George
Lammon, dated yesterday morning,
at Virginia.City, states that George
Downey committed suicide on Wed=
nesday night by taking laudanum.
Downey was formerly a resident of
this city where he worked at mining,
and wad at one timé on the police
force. He went to ‘Virginia during
the silver excitement, and soon earned
the reputation of an excellent police
officer. He was elected Chief of the
police of Virginia, and we think
served two cr more terms, giving
good satisfaction as an offiter, It is
said he drank heavily lately and at
suicide. We believe he leaves a wife
aud several children.
>
Moore‘s Flat.
A gentleman recently from Mooré’s
Flat, informs us that mining and
other matters promise tobe lively in
that vicinity thisseason. The mines
there, at Wouls¢y’s Flat and vicinity,
are looking” first rate and business is
livelyitig upsome, Politically speakAng, Taatters are quiet. There are
said to bea few Dolly Varden Republicans in the vicinity of Moore’s
Flat; but their votes will be more
than offset by the Democrats, who
support Grant, while we learn that a
number of staunch Democrats propose to stand back and not vote for
either of the candidates.
