Daily Frans : ‘NEVADA CITY. CAL. ce ee ne eee onions Thursday, August 16, 1877, Tania The Grass Vulley Uaion says: ‘Ne would like to see a chart of W. J. Shiun’s bead, and so woeulu the people of Nevada County, How ig thut bead for ‘‘Hggers?”’ The people of Nevada county are going to elect Wm. J. Shinn County Clerk of this county, and on the first -Monday.in Murch uext the people will be well sctistied with thet head. In answer to your query im the i ' tan *' br, ubove extract, we will say thet he. er’’ ¢or the county’s ‘best interest us well as any man that ever filled the Office, and he will not ¥sidteen months in finding out a misfesxsonce. On August 5:h the Unica suid: “After Mr. White came ia = an; Clerk, to which office he bad cen. elected, the iuvestigutioas were! maude,”’ — Mr. White went iate office on the } fourth day of March, .1876. The "result of the investigations, above referred to by the Unien, were not given to the Bourd of Supervisors or, District Attorney, until Joly 2nd, 17, = : Did it take sixteen months to go} ~ through one set of b.oks, or was the'. fesult of the investigation kept ‘back, as everybody beliewe:, by Mr. White for the purpose cf assisting him in his election? We have vo knowledge when the investigation com-' _ menced or when it ended, and in the abseuce of other evidence we shall be compelled, very reluctantly, to tske the statement, as made’ by the Grasa Valley Union, If it then be, true that it took-Mr. White six.ece . booker, the people ought to elect Shinn, for we kuow he is better on “figgers’ thun Mr. White, according to the showing made by the Unim. We-cau hardly believe that the County Cleck was sixteen months io attevding to that Lusiness, and think the Unien was lying when it wade such a statement, We are always ready to ‘give the devil” his due, and will iu this oase, : Beath of Joseph O'Keefe. Hews was ceovived in this city, on Monday, says the San Jose Mercury, of the death of Mr. Joseph O'Keefe, a former resideut of thisci'y, and who for some years past has been considerably involved ia litigation concerning bis sanity. Mr. O'Keete, alter the Just. teial iu which he was successful, removed te Sun Fraucisco wheee he has since resided, coming to thie city but rarely. For some weeks past he had been saffering from some complaint, the nature of which is unkaown to us and fromwhieh bedied. A week previous tu hie death he sent for bis wife; who visited bim aed remnined with hia up tethe time of his death. Mr. O'Keefe was an old resident of Grass Valley, and one of the original ownera ef the celebrated Allison Ranch mine, Contract Let. The ceutract for building the new sohvol heuse at Gold Fiat, was given to Nibeli aad Williams, of this city. The fvllowing are the bids: which were opemed on Tuesday: Nibell & Williams, $2,600. Morrison & Sen. ner, $1,674. Wetmore & Holbrook, $2,225. The size of the building is to be 90 fret square,:wo stories, each story 12 feet high. It is to be finish. ed with rastic siding on the outside, and ceiled with four inch ceiling on the inside. Tne house is to buve three couts of puint on the outside and two on the inside, The work is to be completed by the first of Octo“5.0% The Grass Valley Union's. correspondent "‘G. ©," publishes another “eock-and-beli” story about Mujor McBride. Why don't he come out and give his name so the people wili know whether bis statemeuts can be relied spon or not, We know notbing about Major McBride discharging the Cbinauiep from the Amerioan Co's. claim, except what we leurned from residents of the Ridge and ’ the North Sun Juan Times, and we prefer to take their word in prefereuce to that of au anonymous scribbi_r. ; See Pou:tics coutinue to be the abserbing theme. ‘be few who are , Dot cundikl tes Lave friends who Mic, » cn A eR IRE ERR SEE DRS SIRE TBARS Wm. J. Shian. The abuve named gentleman is the Repnblican nominee for the office of County Clerk. A few days ago we tookoccasion_to speak a kind word in bis bebalf, whereat the editor of the Grass Valley Usiou ukes exe-ption thereto. Kuowing whit we suid was trae, the Union in order to4dnislead its renders, adopts a plun which has characterized its é¢olumns from thevery time it. received the order for « ‘1,000, extra copies,”’—that of blackgnsrdism. ‘Tout kind of warfare canuot pr ve suecesstul with decent people. Although we don’t know that we ovght to find f.ult with the Union, for cluptrap, blackguardism and inconsist. ebcies are the cardinal priaciples of the Democracy for this ea.npaign, and the editor of: that paper is but dving b.s duty, as be understunds it. Ww, J. Shien, whom the Union tax seen fit to throw out its dirty slars upon, is 9 geutieman in every sewse of the word. He is dvuing business at Creckee, and standsas bigtrin tee community where he is known, us any mavthere, Even the mort rabid Democrats in that. section concede that be is honest, industrous, and as capable for the office of Coun'y Glerk, a8 any tann tbat ever filled the position, Nutwithstanding the slimy iunueadoes of the Union, be will receive a lirger vote inbis own town than any candidate that was-ever-nominuted in thut section of the county. Selling by Sumypive During the past few weeks quite a number of peddlers, who sell by sumples, huve canvassed the town for orders, Some of hem sell clotbiug, shirts, etc., to be made to order in Sun Francisco, Mow we don’t thiuk itis right or fair to patronize that ‘clase a wen, and we ‘hope our peo= pie wll iuvite them to tuke a wulk to sume otber town, where they are mote likely to be appreciated. Dou’t buy ur give an @rder to thet class of fuuners, Qur merchaats can give meurly as good *urgaiws. as way of thein, and besides peuple should patronize men vf their own towns, These traveling rmavers ouly leave just moncy enoagl in a place to pay fortwo or three meuls of victuuls, white our merchants pay house rents . store rent, licemses, etc. that these traveling runners do net expend a dollarfor. Don’t buy of them when they cull on you; tell them to *‘git.”” Bemao re, Look out for all kinds ef rumors betweeo now and election time.— There will be more of them than a man can shukea stick at, much less anewer. The best way to treat rumors ix to vote the Democratic ticket. That is safe, this year, on all questions, and especially oa the Seuntorial artengembent. divans Valley Undun. *-¥es, Republicans will look oat for all kiuds of rumors, as they usually euunate from Democratic sources, “Vote the Democratic ticket is the best way to treut ramors,” says the Yuion, That remedy is worse than the disexse. Every legislative candidute elected this dull will have a vote for United States Senator. ‘The people are hot prepared vet to substitate a Demoerat for a Republican, ‘Zt wou't do, aud the people know it, and will give expression that way theough the ballot box, on the 5k, of September, Those Poor Treasury Clerks Acting Secretary McCormick has issued a circularto employes of the Teeasury Department, stating that the ecedi¢t of the Government requires that its dutics be performed by hunorable men; that the Seeretary would not be annoyed by creditors seeking their just dues from clerks; that it wes expected thut all just debts would be paid, and that if clerks refase to pay just debts they would be churged w'th fraudulent practices and recommended for the diswissal by the chiefs of the respective bureaus, Thus will it be seen that in future the abused ebjects of civil service reform be obliged to settle their own cigar bills. Alderman for the Ward of Cheup, Aldermen as a peison not fit and proper to support the dignity and discharge the daties of Alderman, has beeu re-elected. oo EP gaint Tue commissioner appointed to eXumine the gold-producipg lands of [z:bre, Gaatemala, report tnat they are rieb iv precious metels; that it is easy of extraction and in great abundance, priveipully on the border of . he B -ho riser. London, end rejeetéd by the court of . “Will the Nevada Tranecrirr . please tell us how Mr. Bacon stands on the Senatorial question ? In the first place, is it any of your business? Of course you will say the people want to know, and therefore we will answer: the question, not to please you, however. Mr. B F. Bacon isthe regular nominee of the Republican party, and it~ will be admitted, without argument, that the people of Nevada county are going to honor themeelves by electing him, He is avintelligent man, knows the wants of the people, .and will not misrepresent them in any way. He never was known to go back on h‘s word, but has ever been faithful to the trusts reposed ip bim. -Kaowing all hie good qual, fications, the Republican Convention nominated him ug one of their standard bearers, and they did nobly in «a» doing. Ino regard to the Senatorial question, which troubles the beguiling editur of the Union, we have just this to say about Mr. Bacon’s position. When approached in regard to his position on the Senatorial question, the day before he was nominated, he. replied: “I am a candidate for the office of Assemblythao, but, if in order-to procure that nomination, I: must pledge myself for, or against any man for the United States Serate, I will not yo into the Convention. If nominated, I must be free and untrammeled; but this much I will say. I will vote for the best Republican candidate for that position, and have no idea who will be my choice, at the present time.” That is Mr. Bacon’s position to-day, and if by: pursuing « different course his election would be assured beyond peradventure, he woutd not deviate from it: Mr. Ba-con is not a demagogue, and he spuras the office if it must be obtained by trickery and misrepresentation. The Grass Valley Union is determined not to dojustice to any candidate on the Republiean ticket, and will keep on questioning their honesty and integrity, so long as it is paid to circulate “1,000 extra copies.” : Another one of those combustible packages was found in A. Lones’ yard, on Monday morning. It had evidently been thrown op the porch the night before. It was made a little differentfrom those found on Broad street. The one picked up by Mr. Lones was made of heavy brown paper, thoroughly saturated with ed with browa tissue paper, end ate attached thereto with a string, was about @ dozen matches, which’ had burned about half way down. The matches wefe probably lit before being thrown on the porch, and went out before igniting the paper. It is a hellish piece of businées, on, she part of those who try to destroy property, and we hope they will be detected and reeive the punishment they deserve. <i. Republican Nominees. H. K. Turner, cundidate for Joint ‘Senator; J. M, Walling, candidate for Seuator; Reuben Leech, Heory Everett and BF, Bacon, candidates for the Assembly; Major McBride, cund date fer Sheriff; Wa. J. Shinn, candidate for County Clerk; W. K, Spencer, candidate for Treasurer: John A. Rapp, candidate fur Recorder; aud G, E. Robinsun, candidate for Superintendent of schools, will visit Moore’s Fist this evening, Eureka to-morrow evening, and North Bloomiield on Sutarday evening. ‘They are all good looking men, aud worthy of the offices they will fill ia this county, on and after the 4th day of neat March. For the life of us wed n't understand bow a Demucrat can vote aguinst any of the ubove jbamed gentlemen. If they will take . . our udvice, they will vote for them, so their votes will be recorded in favor of those candidates who are bound to be successful om the Sth duy of March next. ‘THe Chronicle libel suits at Placerville draws large crowds each day, The prosecution have rested their side of the case. G. W. Pinney is still on the witpess stand. His answers ure well mitared, A DISPATCH suys a large crowd marched the streets of Athens lately shouting, **¥ar! Wart!’ Tt is believed that the imoment for Greece the ship canal to connect the Aflantic ‘and Pucifio“is being revived. A Washington dispatch states that O'Sullivan, who has always been prominently interested in the proposed Inter-Ovean Nicaragua Canal, has been atthe State Department lately on diplomatic business connected with that enterprise. He says the work wili cost $80,000,000 and can be completed within five years. No appropriation will be a ked of Congress, but a subscription will be-opened in ull parts of the worli, He xpenks confidently of the success of the work, the surveys for which buve ulready been made by the United States Government. —— Oe “Rights of Comscience.”’ Dr-W. J. Collier, 6f Stockton, now in this city, avd this evening he wil: lecture in frout of the Natioval Exchange Hotel. His subject will be “Rights of Conscieuce.”” Dr. Collier is the discoverer of the celebrated “Spirit Relief,’’ aod will offer it for sule at the close of the leeture. Ic.18 suid to be an excellent remedy for pains of ull kinds, The Doctor ia a good talker, and ull who attend his lecture, will undoubtedly be well pleased with his. lecture, and with his medicine—wfter they have tried it.iyi . Dent Woriy About Yourself. To retain or recover health, peraons should be relieved from anziety concerning disease, The mind has power over the body—for # person
to think he has a disease, will often produce that disease, This we see effected when the oiind is intensely concentrated upon the disease of another. We have seen a person seasick in anticipation of a voyage, ‘before resebing “thé vessel. ~““We' have known people to die of cancer 1 the stomach, when they had no caucer in the stomach or any other mortal disease, A blindfolded man, slightly pierce@ in the arm, has fainted and died from believing he was biveding to death. Therefore persons shuuld have their minds diverted as much az poseible fram themeclves. It is by their faith that men are saved, and it is by their faith that they die. As a man thiuketh, ev ishe. Ifhe wills not to die, he can often live in spite. of the disease; aud if he has Jittle or no attachment to lite, he will slip awey ascasily as a child will fell asleep. Men live by their, minds-ss well as by their bodies. Their bodies have np lives of: themselves ; they are only receptacles of lite— tenements for their, minds, and the will has much to do in continuing the physical oceupapcy or giving it Up, says an exchange. oS j . & Lowpox spevial says profound apprebeusions and apxiety exist in, ali commercial ana financial cizeles here respecting the repudiation moremeuts in Gourgie and Virginia.
