NEVADA CITY, CALIFORNIA.
LOCAL INTELLIGENCE, .
THE Ripez.—On Saturday we visited
the various points in Bridgeport town_ship,frcm San Juan to French. Corral,
_ #id were pleased to note the evidences
» of taste and thrift in the homes ef the
people, and of prosperity in the mines
of the region. The towns of San Juan,
Sebastopo!, Sweetiand, Bikchville and
French Corral have many cosy cottages,
while, scattered all along the road are
residences, so near together as to make
a garden spot of the waole distance—
six miles. The trees are heavily laden
with rich and ripe fruits, and the climate is the most favorable tor a.1 agrjcultural and horticultural products. We saw in an orchard belonging to V.
G. Bell a dozen fig trees, the largest of
which was ten inches in diameter, and
the figs, ripe and luscious, were ag large
as peaches. The grapes are already
ripening, and peaches, plums and ap-~
ples; with every variety of vegetables,
are found about every residence in such
profusion that much is wasted. Some
excellent Culifornia wine has been
made in this locality, and in the vicinity
of French Corral a number of Frenchmien reside, who have given considers
able attention to the cultivation of
grapes for wine. For permanent and
pleasant homes this locality will compare with any portion of the State, and
a trip through the township, so pleasant on this account, is still more attract.
ive because hydraulic mining may be
there seen under the most favorable
circumstances. ;
Tae Mrves.—At San Juan Hill there
is at present but little mining done,
but at Sebastopol, just below, the
American Company’s cluims are located.
These claims are at what is known as
Manzanita Hill, and their extent may
be known from the fact that_six years
washing has only enabled the miners
to run on the channel about 800 feet,
and they still have at least 2,200 feet of
unbroken ground. The American Co.
has bought up eight or nine other min-.
ing claims, and now owns about all the
ground on the hill. . They now have
three. bed rock tunnels running into
their claims, and men are engaged,
night and day, in running one of these
in for the parpose of getting up under
the new banks. Thirty to forty men
are constantly employed in the claims,
and four pipes are kept continually
playing against the banks, which are
now abcut 180 feet in hight. The
cement {rom the channel is very hard,
and an immense quantity of powder is
used in blasting, one charge last year
amounting to 510 kegs. In running
the main bed rock tunnel and cut this
company wae fortunate enough to find
aseam in the rock from which they
could take the rock out. in blocks or
slabs, securing perpendicular walls cut
in the rock by the hand of Nature. The
hardeP cement is worked in an eight
stamp mill; and the company has
blacksmith shop>office, melting furnace
and other buildings on the ground, so
that the work éven to the melting of
gold into bars, is done on tlie ground.
The yield of this mine = lust’ yeaP.was
$149,000, and for a long time, the yielkth
after each run has been so-uniform, that
for every 15 or 16 days of ten hours
from $7,000 to $8,000. can be counted
on. At Sebastopol, Messrs. Swan,
Brown, Spooner and Major McBride,
members of the company, . reside, ‘and
have very neat places. Mr. Brown i8
foreman in the mine.
The Buckeye Hill claims, owned by
Genl. Evans, John Stidger & Co, are
located jugt below Sweetland. This
company is now rcnning a bed rock
tunnel for ‘Sweetland Creek, which,
when compleved, will be 1,800 feet long.
In the tunnel they employ six men day
andnight. ‘They are also washing, aud
employ at ‘this time 22 men, using
about 600 inches of water. After the
last run of six weeks the claim yielded .
$18,000, which is about an average.
This company has abundance of ground,
and seme coutroversy arising, they
recently bought the Granite Tunnel
ground, paying therefor $60,000. The
company recently had an offer of $180,000 for their ground. Messrs. Stidger
. Fitteenmien are employed, and 500
and Evans have fine residences, beautifully located on an eminence from which
they have a full view of thetr extensive
claims.
ny have also fine claims on the channel.
inches of water used, obtaining first-rate
réturns. nee
At French Corral we had not time to
visit the mines, but we learn that five]
or six claims are being, worked ‘and a
number of! men are employed. Mr.
Pollinier is putting up a ten stamp mi.}
and in a short time five such mills will
be at work in this vicinity. The mines,
se far as we were able to learn, were
paying well.
WonDERS OF *THE WORLD.—This is
the title of a grand pictorial work which
J. B. Drummond is now canvassing this
city for It contains startling incidents,
interesting scenes and wonderful events
in all countries, all ages and among all
people, by the celebrated author, C.G.
Rosenberg. If you wish to be surprised, delighted, startled; instructed,
amused, entertained,fascinated and eles
vated—if you wish to laugh, to wonder
and reflect, buy this book. It is printed
from a beautiful, clear, new type, on
fine, hard, silicious paper, made expressly for this work, comprised in one
large quarto volume of over 500 pages,
equal to an octavo of over 1,000 paves,
most eminent urtists, and will be —furnished to subscribers only.
LIFE ASsURANCE.—Don’t be deceived
by the representations of agents but
examine the conditions of the policy
before taking it. There is only one
Insurance Company that issues policies
which recommend themselves to a mining community, and that is the North
America Life Insurance Company, of
New York. ‘These policies are not forfeited in case a man. is compelled to
change his business tothat of mining,
blasting, running an engine or any
other business deemed hazaruous. The
North America is a purely mutaal Life
Insurance Company. 8. B. Davenport,
of this city, is agent for Nevada, Piacer
and Sierra counties.
