LOCAL AFFAIRS. / A Good Joke. “ During the peregrinations of the “‘Cireus’’ company on the Ridge, one of the orators related a bear story in évery speech he made. He related " itso often that his confreres became tired of listening to it, and one of the candidates accompanying the concern. hit on an exvedient to give a quietus to the story. In traveling along the road his eyes chanced to light upon a runt of a pig not much larger than a rat and as black as ebony. He caught the pig, put it into his wagon, and went on to the place appointed for the meeting that day.’ When the orator that evening relatéd his bear story, and said the bear was. dead, he wis-contradicted much to hisastonishment;and the] pig was produced té prove the bear was still living. Of course the affair created much merriment at the expense of the orater, who stands greatly on his dignity. We learn ~that he refuses to travel with the Circus any longer unless the manager will promise that no more practical jokes shall be played at his expense. <-> , Meeting at French Corral. Vv We have been furnished a well. written communication from a correspondent at North San Juan, giving an account of the Republican meeting at French Corral on Monday evening, but owing to its length, and the amount of matter alrcady prepared for this issue, we are compelled to forego its publication. The meeting was the largest and most enthusiastic held at that place for years. Speeches were made by Messrs. B. J. Watson, John W. Clark, and M. S. ~-Deal,-and Messrs; Days and Barkér: of the Assembly ticket, were called but declined to speak at length on account of the lateness of the hour. <*> > / Resurrecting. Some chap with more leisure than brains ispublishing in the Guzetie i series of articles over the signature of eG MEY up what Lloyd Garrison, Wendell Phillips, Wm. H. ~ Seward, and other Abolitionists said about slavery and the United States slave code, before the war of rebellion wiped them all out. It isa good thing.. We. like to see it..It-helps fill up the columns of our neighbor that perhaps would be occupied with something to our disadvantage. Veritas, you’re o brick. Pit¢h in and tell us in your next what Wendell Phillips thinks of your party now. Whether he is now a Democrat, a Republican, or what! Facetious! Very. Our Main street neighbor is growing very facetious. In his paper of Tuesday evening, in a nauseating, puny, sickly article, speaking of Mr. Deal, the editor of this paper and the the locum tenens of the Transcrirt, he uses the following dignified language: “‘He,’? Mr. Deal, ‘tis succeeded in his absence by Locum Tenans, who we know wields the pen of -a ready writer, and is an editorial prestiStidger-tater of the first water.’’ The wit of our neighbor is sublime in the extreme. We advised him in yesterday morning’s Transcript to keep his brains cool, and told him how to do do it. We fear, however, that our prescription came too late; that Some other doctor got ahead of us. We are well satisfied that our neighbor could never have concocted sv much wit at one time, unless he had been sitting on a cake of ice half an hour cooling his intellect. Disappointed. The man of the Qakland News is hard to please. On Saturday night last Governor Haight madea speech there, and here is what the News Says about it, under the head, disappointment; We wish our Democratic fellow citizens would not bilk us any more. We stayed up on Saturday night, on purpose to hear Sunset Cox, who is a speaker of eloquence and refinement, but he didn’t come; he was not there, and we suppose he was~announced as a ‘‘flyer.’’ We knew Governor Haight was not much of a stump speaker, and we did not care to hear the supes, Hamilton and Hambleton, but: half an hour from the brilliant and eloquent Sunset Cox Would compensate for a deal of suffering. But hedidn’t come; and we Were villaniously bilked. Bive thousand fect of Rubber Belting and Hose; all widths and sizes, ‘WOr Bale at! As soon as an article purporting to be of utility has been tested, and its merits indorsed by public opinion, unprincipled parties endeavor .to_replenish their depleted purses by eounterfciting, and substituting a spurious for the genuine article. Some time since, mereury, in the disguise of pilis, powders, &c., was given for all diseases of the stommch and liver, while quinine was freely. administered for the chills. length Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters made its advent, and an entire new system of healing was inaugurated. ‘The beneficial effects of this valuable preparation were at once acknowledged, and mineral poisons suffered to sink into that obscurity to which an enlightened age has consigned them. There have been many spurious bitters palmed upon the community, which, after trial, have been found utterly worthless, while Hostetter’s has\ proved a blessing to thousands, who owe to it their restoration to health, : For many years we have watched the steady progress of Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters in public estimation, and its benificent effects as a cure for all complaints arising from the stomach of a morbid nature, and we are free to say that it can be relied upon as a certain relief and remedy. Its proprietors have made the above preparation, after years of carcful study and sitting, and are now reaping the reward claimed by this valuable specine, and which they 80 richly merit. Itis tie only preparation of the Kind that is reliwble in ali cuses, and it therefore demands thc attcntion of the oe PAIN KILLER. PERRY DAVIS & SON, PROVIDENCE, R. I., PROPRIETORS. 1840. 1871. The “ Parn Kr.ter” may justly be styled the great medicine of tue world, fur there is bu region of the globe into which it has not found its way, und been largely used and highly prized. Moreover, tucre is no Clime tu Wuich it has nut proved tuo be well adapted for the cure of a considerable varicty of diseases; it isa speeuy and safe remedy for buras, scalds, cuts, bruises, wounus, and various other injuries, as well as for dysentery, diarruwa, aud bowel complaints yeneraliy, it is muuuirably suited fur every race of men on the face or the globe. It is a very significant fact, thut notwithstanding the loug period of ycars’ that tha ‘Pain Miller” has been betere the world, it bas never lost one wnit of its popularity, but, on the contrary, the call for it has steadily increased trom its first discovery‘ and at no previous time hus toe demand tor it been go great, or the quantity made been so large, as to-day: piel Another significant fact is, that nowhere has the Pain Killer ever been in higher repute, or been more generally used by families and individuals, tuan it bas been here at home, where it was first discovered and introduced, That the Pain Killer will continue to be,;'what “we ‘hive styled it, THE GREAT MEDICINE .OF THE WORLD, there can not be the shadow of a doubt.—[ Providence Advertiser.
