The Hydraulic Chiet.
We examitied on Tuesday evening?
‘at Fisher’s machine shop, one of his . lmrge size. machines, which he calls the

company at Smartsville, and was sent
down yesterday morning. It weighs
about one thousand pounds, is intend.
ed to throw'a seven-inch stream, and
about seven hundred inches of water
according to the Smartsville measurement, which is equal to about a thoneand inches here. The Hydraulic

govern such a large body of water under a 200-fdot” re. We tan not
well deseribe the machine, but we
may remark briefly, that the nozzle is
governed by means of a lever projecting some ten or twelve feet to the rear
of the joint, so: that, besides the advantage.of great leverage, the operator is
gome twenty feet further from the
bank i case of a cave. The large size
machine of this kind costs $300.
Valuable Map.
We have received from the publisher
a copy of Lloyd's ‘Topegraphical and
Railway map of Europe, and showing
particularly’ the fortreadés ‘and strategi~ teat pointé-where the Frencl‘and Prussian armies are now pperating. The
map is projected on “the scale of fifty
miles to the inch, ‘The publisher gives
notice thathé’has avchrate surveys of
. France, ‘and Prussia, on 9 scale of one
mile to. the inch, and showing every
towh, village, mountain, stream, wagon
road, ete.. Maps on this scale are to be
issued: in sections, size 80x40 inches,
and will be sold at fifty cents a copy.
Each section joins accurately, and the
whole of Prussia or France will be in
six sections, A map of both countries
on this scale can thus be had for three
dollars, and sent free by mail. E.
