_ Promotions.
The interest taken inioar schools
by parents,.in many instances, is
well illustrated by theigaorance they
have‘ in reference to the rules for
prometion from one grade to another. Many. parents. were dissatisfied
at the last examination because their
children were not promoted, If they
will during the coming year visit the
school’ and lédtn “the conditions for
‘promotion, they will, avoid similar
experiencé at the next examination.
‘In each grade there are three classes,
denominated A, B and C, -In entering'a higher grade the pupil'is placed . .
in the C class of that grade. As he .
Advances he i8 promoted to the B
and then to the A class, after. finishing thoroughly, the course prescribed
for those classes, and passing a satisfactory examination, he is promoted
to another school. I have been
asked by a number of parents why
their children: were not promoted,
find fonhd upon inqniry that they
were in the B or C class—none but
the A class in each school. is examined at the close of the year for promotion. If parents will. manifest
the same anxiety’ thranghout the
year'to have their childrem advance
‘in their studies that:they do at the
close of the.year to have, them pro“moted, but few will fail‘at. the next
examination. ~ . Ww.
? Ec ccalnations:
Otr éxarninations as now conducted are of but. little use, To be, of
wnd thorough. No pupil should be
allowedta Hntér-a highét’ schéol jntil thoroughly familiar. with the sabjects taughtin the otie-he ig in,, Promotion is not an evidends-of. proficiency if made upon otlier cundi-.
tions, ‘Besides:it 1s a positive injury
to a child to,place him in. classes far
inadvance of him, Nothing but discouragement and disgust. with: study
and school can result froth ‘such a
course. Parents will do’a* ‘kindness
and teachers a duty, by, not only discouraping but ‘absolutely forbidding
promotion witheut thurough proficiency.. It would, be agappropriate
