» ‘LOCAL AFFAIRS,
The Public Schools, ba i
The schools of this city re-opened:
yesterday. There are eight schuols
in the department, all under the
supervision of Frank Power, teacher
of the High-echool. There are two
Primary, three Intermediate, one
Grammar, one High school, and the
Colored school, Miss Kate Edwards
is teacher of the 2d Primary or infant school, and she has 103 pupils
enrolled. “Miss Kate Madigan--has
charge of the Ist Primary, and open_ed with 60.—Miss Allie Davenport
has the 3d Intermediate, and has 80:
~Miss Gibbs has. the 24 Intermediate,
with 61, and F. H. Mc Allister the .
‘1st Intermediate, . with et pupils.
Mis. M. L. Watson 3 rcharge of
‘the Grammar schodl, and’ has 50 pupils: The High school, with Mr.
Frank Power as Principal, opened
with 59 pupils, and Miss Seraphine
Nilon, who has charge of the Colored
school, has about 18-pupils, It will
be seen that there are altogether in
. attendance the first-day, 502 pupils.
_The nuniber--will doubtless be increased targely during the -week,
From the crowded coudition of the
2d Primary, it is absolutely necessary that another school be organ:
ized, There ig a ‘room ready, and
the Board of Education will; without
doubt, consider it necessary to have
it brought into use, The schools
start off well, and it is hoped that
the year will be blessed with ood
schools throughout.
A Much Needed im provement.
Court House Alley leads to the
School House, and is much used by
children going to and from school. .
It is at present in a very_bad condition. The dust is deep and it is
very rough. It is,absolutely necessary for the convenience of the
school children ag well as. others
who pass that way, that a sidewalk
be built on it, Tere are good reasons why this should be done, and
why that should continue to be the
way children should pass. Will the
proper authorities see that the work
is done?
_. ‘Weed Contract.
The following bids were received
for furnishing the Court House with
wood; and yesterday the proposals
were opened: °
Victoria Sanoet, $5 98 per cord.
James Fraser, $5 75 #6
_ Jacob Arbogast, $5 45 “s
H. A: Lones, $5 25 bid
Supervisor Marsh awarded the
“contract to-Mr. Loues.
Closed for a F.w Days.
Antonio Tam left thismorning,
with his family, for a short visit to
the Bay. During their absence,
which will be about a week or ten
days, Mr. Tam’s oyster saloon’ will
be closed.

B. H. Miller has secured the enviable reputation of-being a straight
forward, honorable biisiness man.
He has been in business in this city
several years, and has yet to find a
man who accuses him of a dishonorable act. Hig business has steadily
increased, until his sales are the
heaviegt in town, and by fair dealing
he proposes to ‘still farther increase
them. Yesterday we noticed a ‘arge
shipment of his goods being made to
Moore's Flat, whe e his salesman,
Mr. Jacobs; intends dispogjing of
them at astonishingly low rates. We:
#an recommend Mr. Jacobs to the
people of Moore’s Flat as being perfectly honorable in every transaction.
They can purcbuse goods of him

‘Inviting Sickness,
A belief that violent purgation -is the’
surest remedy forevery human ailment
prevails to a lamentable extent among
some classes of the community,-It might
be thought that the languid, the debilitated
the depressed, would know instinctively
that their systems need toning, invigorating and reguiating with some. wholesome
stimulant and alterative, and that a fierce
cathartic is as unsuited to their condition
as a strong dose of active poison would bé
to aman already laboring under the effects
of some deleterious drug. In all-cases of
-Hostetter’s Stomach
Bitters should be promptly resorted to by
the invalid. The operation of this inesti-’
matle vegetable restorative is three-fold.
It vitalizes and reinforces the depressed
nervous system, while at the same. time it
regulates the digestive and secretive organs
and Keeps the bowels free. Debility is often the forerunner of an attack of some
acute disease, and to prostrate the strength
still more by scouring the bowels with a
drastic evacuant at such a juncture to invite the immediate onset of the impending
disorder, and render the system incapable
of contending with it. On rhe other hand,
a course of the Bitters, commenced as
soon as the spmptoms of general debility
manifest themselves, will in nine cases out
of fe prevent the threatened attack and
ughly restore the bodily strength of
Fine atient. The cases of dyspepsia, liver
complaint, constipation, dysent ry, diarr-haa, rheumatieni and periodical fevers
would becomparatively few if this unequalled invigorating and regulating medi
cine were slwaysresorted to asa cure for
the bodily weakness and Jose of vita] energy which usually precede these complaints
and are, indeed, a8 a gener.1 rule, theprecursors Of nearly ali acute and dangervus
