NEVADA CITY, CAL.
LOCAL AFFAIRS.
Beautifal Work.
We were yesterday shown the jew.
‘els made for the officers of Evange‘line Chapter, Order of the Eastern
Star, in this city, by ©. J. Brand,
jeweler. The Fast Matron’s jewel
is as good a specimen of work as we
have ever seen in that line. It-is of
solid silver, about four inches in diameter, and made in the ‘shape of a
‘a star. Each point of the star is set
with a precious stone, all of different
_ Below each point .is engraved the *‘sword and veil’’, “‘sheaf
of wheat,” “crown and seeptre,’’.
““broken column,” and. ‘cap’? In-.
“side of this is another five pointed
‘star, in the centre of which is a beautiful raised gavel. It was last evening presented to Mrs, John Caldwell,
Past Matron of the Chapter, by the
members, The other fourteen jewels, which are also of solid silver and
appropriately engraved, were presented tothe Chapter by Mrs. I. J,
Rolfe. We were not aware before
that we had in our midst snch an
artistic workman as Mr. Brand. .
_ The Railroad.
Gangs of men are strung along: at
different points oh Gold Flat, and
*, an early completion of the road up
to the Town Talk Hill, looks favor__able, The work at the tunnel, bow-. —————___-—ever, looks to us rather slow. Five
men on a shift are worked on the
cut this side the hill; and eight on
the other side. There is a heavy
job there yet, and there is but two
or three months to complete the
work. It looks toa man up a tree
as if hurrying was in order,
