We were yesterday shown the jew. ‘els made for the officers of Evange‘line Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, in this city, by ©. J. Brand, jeweler. The Fast Matron’s jewel is as good a specimen of work as we have ever seen in that line. It-is of solid silver, about four inches in diameter, and made in the ‘shape of a ‘a star. Each point of the star is set with a precious stone, all of different _ Below each point .is engraved the *‘sword and veil’’, “‘sheaf of wheat,” “crown and seeptre,’’. ““broken column,” and. ‘cap’? In-. “side of this is another five pointed ‘star, in the centre of which is a beautiful raised gavel. It was last evening presented to Mrs, John Caldwell, Past Matron of the Chapter, by the members, The other fourteen jewels, which are also of solid silver and appropriately engraved, were presented tothe Chapter by Mrs. I. J, Rolfe. We were not aware before that we had in our midst snch an artistic workman as Mr. Brand. . _ The Railroad. Gangs of men are strung along: at different points oh Gold Flat, and *, an early completion of the road up to the Town Talk Hill, looks favor__able, The work at the tunnel, bow-. —————___-—ever, looks to us rather slow. Five men on a shift are worked on the cut this side the hill; and eight on the other side. There is a heavy job there yet, and there is but two or three months to complete the work. There have been several changes made in the teachers of the different reoms, but only one. new ‘ teacher empluyed.’. There has been a long vacation, and both teachers and pupils have had a good rest. There ought to be good work accomplished the next term. Speaking To-night. Hon. Joba M, Coghlan, ex-member of Congress, will address the people of this city from the Broad street stand this evening. Mr, Coghlan is a good speaker, and his speeches in other parts of the State, are very highly spoken of by the press of all parties. He will duubtless be greeted by a large audience, as he should be. The Forest Ball. Jas. Faulkaor has about completed his arrangements for the Grand For‘est Ball, which takes placein the grove opposite the Glenbrook House, on Friday evening of this week. There will’ be.alarge delegation in -attendance from this city and Grass Valley. Rare fan is in stere for all who attend, 4 > The Marietta Mine. We usderstand the mine and_ mill property of the Marietta Company, in Washington tewnship, in this county, has been sold to parties in Sap Francisco. Preparations are being made to commence operations on the mine on a very extensive _ scale, Ceanty Court. The trial of Mathew Young, charged with assault with intent to cemmit murder, was commenced in the County Court on Monday. Yesterday afternoon the case was submitted te the jury, who returned a werdict of guilty. Friday morning at10 o’clogk was ret by the Court for pronouncing judgment. Private School,Mrs. C. B.
