of communism that pervaded the

,of Président Garfield’s shootin,
ezould be traced back to the cominon
use of intoxicants -which had filled
the land with tramps.: To show
that the principles of temperance
were growing in favor, he said Mr.
Towne had told ‘him that the Central
Pacific Railroad Company was about
to issue an order forbidding its employers, under pain of dismised!, from

* Assault to Murder.
On Monday. Philip Qairk was ar-.
rested ou.a charge of assault with
‘intent te commit murder, on the
complaiat ofPaniel Ludington. Luiington states that Quirk was cutring
trees.on Alta Hill near the house of
the former, and un moving some
lumber he, Quirk, threw it around
in such & manner as to greatly iijure
it. Upon being required tu desist
Quirk made an assault on Ladiagton
-with an axe, cutting his :hand.
Quirk himself has the general appearance of being badly @sed in the
row, and he has had Ludington ar-_
rested on two charges of battery.—

P Subduing a Bucking Horse.
Four different horse trainers having ‘tried to break Judge Robinson's
colt, and all of them: giving up the
job in despair after getting all their
harness and wagons broken to pieces,
the Judge determined Tuesday afternoon to try~ his own powers of persuasion en the obstreperous animal,
He got several men to hold it while
he climbed into the saddle. . As
soon as he was seated they let go,
and as soon as they let go he wasn’t
seated. He sailed straight through,
the air twenty feet, and landed on
his back in the road, When he had
picked himself up and got ¢ato the
saddle again he profited by his experience and guarded against sur-—
prise so euccessfully that the .animal could not throw ‘him off. He
finally subdued it, but whea he
dismounted the blood was pouring
from his nose and he was half blind
and staggered like a drunken man
from the shaking up he_ received.
He says he woulin’s go through
that experieace again for $5,000.
He considers the colt, now that it is
“broken,” worth $1,000. He is
therefore $4,009 out of pocket and
very sore.
