OPINION. OF JUDGE SEARLS.—The
Board of Supervisors of the county, before
proceeding to call for the election of a county
Assessor and Collector, applied to J udge’
Searls for his opinion of the Township law
so far as that law has.reference to the two
offices of Assessor and_ Collector. The fol~
lowing is his opinion and upon it the Super.
visors have acted: ; .
~ To the Hon. Board of Supervisors in and
for the county of Nevada.
Gentlemen—I am requested to indicate to
you my opinion in regard to your ordering an
election to fill the offices of county Assessor
and 'Tax Collector for Nevada county. .
By the act of May 15th, 1862, the duty of
assessing and collecting revenue for State
and county .purposes is imposed upon tewnship officers in those counties -where the
people by a majority vote -have (as in this
county) adopted the Township law.
The 20th section of that act however éx~
empts from its provisions all towns and cities
incorporated prior to May 15th, 1862, either
under general or special laws.
It is understood that both Nevada -and
Grass Valley were incorporated towns prior
to the last mentioned date.
As the new law makes no provision for
collecting revenue'in those towns, and does
uot repeal either expressly or by implication,
the previous statutes rte. subject, Jam
clearly of the opinion that the reyenueg in
thse towns remains to be assessdd and céls
lected under the general revenue system, and
to that end an Assessor and Collector should
be elected by tl county at large to discharge
the-duties of those respective offices in all
the towns of the county incorporated prior
to May 15th, 1862.
I remain, gentlomen, your ob’t sarv’t,
NILES SEARLS.

( We have received the following par
ticulars of the death of Vanemon, from a
correspondent at Red Dog :
The body of W. G. Vanemon was found in
his diggings at. Remmington Hill on the 13th
‘inst. R. McGvun, Justice of the Peace,
was called to hold an inquest and the fullow~
ing jury was sworn :
A. P. Shutt, J. V. Faulks, M. Zimmerman, H. K. West, and George A. Beath.
After an examination they returned a verdict that the deceased came to his death by
the caving ofa bank while workiag in his
claims. He was alone when the accident
occurred and the siipposition is that he could
have been saved had there been any one near
him when the bank. caved..No bones -were
broken.

Judges, W. N. JaPUBLIC MeeTinc’—There was a foe .
meeting to discusa the questions of the day
‘60 Saturday evening last, at the usual place,
for. such gatherings. Judge Belden waa’
called to the chair; and he made a very
pleasing introductory speech, which put a
large audience in a capital humor. Hon. W:
H. Sears, the speaker of the evening, was
tlén introduced, who gave us a Vigorous and
‘telling speech of ‘an buur and a quarter in
length. It is the first time Mr. Sears has
honored our town with a speech from. the
selves better to.the. satisfaction of an audienee. :
At-the-conchusion of the speech of Mr.
Sears, Sargent was called out, and was proceeding in his usual forcible-maaner, when
understanding Hon. J. H. Warwick,of Sacramento had just arrivediu town, he cailed for
Warwick and gave the stand to him.
. Mr. Warwick madea few captivating pat~
riotic remarks which: greatly delighted the
crowd, wheu the meeting at alate hour adjourned, :
The crowd in attendance was thuch larger
than was expected—about the same size as
the Bigliar meeting of a few evenings pres
vious. It was an enthusiastic meeting and
had a good effect.
_ Horse Race.—The proprietors of the
the horses, “Bob Cole” and ‘Sorrel Charley,’
. not satisfied with the resulé of the recent
race at Sacramento, have agreed upon anotha
cr race to come off over the Gleenbrook
Course, on the 18th of September. The
proprietors of the track offer a purse of $250.
The stakes are $500 a side, beat 3 in 5. It
will be an interesting time for lovers of
sport.
Hon. W. H. Seats repeated a new epi«
taph for John B. Weller the other evening.
Here lies John B. Weller; the king of knaves,
The greatest copperhead ameng the graves.
Ld
SUPERVIsoR’s CALL.—We call attention
to the long advertisement calling an election
Se. It will be noticed that the Supervisors lidvélerdered the election of a county Assesaur and a county Collector. Our space will
allow of few remarks in addition to thuse al=
ready made.
u Hedda, Thomas Poyser, Alexander
Henderson, were admitted to citizenship in
the District Court on Saturdey last.
TURNING UP.—We see by our exchanges
thet Cliut. Patchin, formerly of this county,
is nominated as the copperhead candidate for
county clerk of Mono. Will, Hicks Gra»
ham is the ‘candidate for Assemblyman on
the same ticket.
———$—
WE. PROTEST.—We protest against degrading the beautiful name of Tahoe by aps
plying it to such alump of rottenness as John
. Bigler. There is no wit or sense in the ape
plication. Let's stop it. 2
PROPER . NAME.—Woeatmoreland calls
John B. Weller; Old “Simple Slab.” alluding
to that simple slab with the epitaph on.
EASTERN NEws.—The news from. the
East is voluminous but of less importance
than common. Nothing from Charleston
and almost nothing’from any other point.
“THAT’S a fine strain, said one gentleman
to another, alluding ‘to the tones of a singer
at aconcert the other evening, Yes, ‘said a
couatryman who sat near, but if.be strains
much more, he’ll bust.”
CoL. CHapwn, of 116th new York regiment, who fellat Port Hudson, was a nephew of Judge Norton of the Supreme Court of
California.
A RUSSIAN danseuse—a ‘
caused a furore at the grand opera iu Paris.
She is the lightest sylph that ever floated in
human form before the footlights, dances to a
‘flute. accompaniment, und tie money she
earns, and the jewelry she wears are said to
be marvelous. .
IT is‘estimated by reliable authority that
before next Congress assembles, 150 te 200
national banks will have been organized in
the Northern States.
GoaT IsLanp RaILroap.—The locomotive and cars were placed on the track of
this road to-day and made a few trips backwards and ferwards-for the purpose of gets
ting the “hang of the thing,” and on Monday:
the boats will commence making regular
trips from Broadway wharf to the terminus.
The completion of this road makes Oakland
a suburban village and reduces the’ time
between our city and it to about 35 minx
