Starving Coai Miners.
According to the Chicago Tribune c¢
June 25th, there is much suffering
among the Indiana coal-miners, so
much that the Governor of that State
has felt it necessary to ixsue an appeal
for their relief. The Tribune says: If
there is not an equal amount of suffering at this moment among the same
class of men in Illinois it is certain
that tbere soon wi.) be, and that they
will be starving iftPev are not sided
It is estimated that now. there are
nearly ten thousand men out of work,
which means that thousands of women
and children are also destitute. Moreover, the miners live in communities
by themselveS and practically compose the entire population, so tha!
when distress comes on they have no
neighbors to whom th y can turn.
Relief, if it comes, must come* from
without.

Seth Martin Sets the Pest Right
aste Their Safety.
The Sun Frareisco Pust-of Saturday
says: Seth Martin, an old miner of
Nevada county, talked to a Post reporter this morning concerning the
secure which the bursting of the Johnetown dam had created. Ue said that
‘most of the talk in the néwspaper
was nonsense and liable to result in a
good deal of injury tu Nevada county.
“The Ferdyce valley dam,’ he said,
county. It is at the head of the north
fork of the south fork of the Yuba
river. The dam is built sub-tantially
of stone, fenced upon‘ the inner side
with sugar pine plank, for the purpose of preventing any seepage from
escaping. Every particle of water is
of value to the Canal Company.
“The Meadow Lake dam is upon
the watershed of the same stream. It
is built of granite and, I think, faced
upon the inner side with clay and
. gravel to prevent seepaye. The discharge pipe from this and the Fordyce
j dam are both of iron,.°There is no
wood used in the construction of either
for the purpose of. strengthening the
dum. There isno material used inthe
construetion that is liable to decay, Any
necessary repairs that may be requisite
ure constantly’ made. Men are constantivy, in charge, These two reser.
voirs belong to the Yuba,Canal Compathy.
‘“Fhe Bowman dam, which furfiishes
water to supply the Lleomtield ditch,
is al-o constructed of rock. There are
no tin bers used for the purpose of cor.
struction where their decay would
wexken the dum in the least. The

reservoirs for which Nevada coun y is
famous, the onlyreservoir that has
ever broken is:the one belonging to
the Milton Water and Mining Cumpany. It was clearly proved in a suit
tried in Sierra county that the dam
was blown up by dynamite, and it was
generally supposed to be at the in: t nee
of the anti-debris people of the valley.
fhe French lakes, which supply. the
Eureka lake and the Yuba Canal Company’s d.tches, are intact and kept
