FOR VICE PRESIDENT.
_ ANDREW’ JOHNSON.
Eastuan News.—A large rebel cavalry
and artillery force; 8,000 strong, entered
Chambersburg, July 30th, at 30’clock a. mM:
Gov, Curtin bas issued a proclamation calling
the people to arme to defend their homes. —
The wires are al cut between Chambersburg
-and Cumberland. The people are enrolling
rapidly at Harrisbarg.
At Philadelphia the excitement is intense

A gentleman who left. Chambersburg on
the 30th says that the merchants and business men packed up their stocks and went
beyong the reath of the rebels by 10 o'clock
the evening previous. When the rebels entered the city they encamped on the Fair
Grounds. They were met a short distance
from Mercersbarg by a small force from
Carlislo Barracks, who Opposed their advance stubbornly, but were cumpelled to
withdraw. The disposition ot the: rebel
forces after they crossed the Potomac is dis~—eribed~ by the informant as follows: One
party moved through Mercersburg, another
through Waynesboro, and a third by way of
Greencastle. Gen. Averill is reported as
having engaged their center and compelling
them to fall back. A large number of fugi»’
tives and colored people accompany the
trains of the rebels. ‘The rebels are report__ed_to-have-burned the Court House, Town
Hall, and all other buildings at Chambers.

erowent relative to affairs in Pennsylvania.
_.The preparations made to get. there with
‘the militia of the State are ample to give the
invaders a severe thrashing.
It ie anid that Breckintidge is making a faid
towards Wheeling, or is about to return by
way of Kanawa valley. It seems by the
statements of these privoners that it is the intention of Longstreet to threaten Washing' ton, while Breckinridge makes a raid in-the
mountaine and Karly holds the Shenandoah
valley. i
Official advices state that the utmost con=
fidence is felt at Washington that Grant will
soon achieve 4 series of brilliant successes,
and that the rebel capital will svon bein our
Petersburg was being vigorously shelled
by our forces on the 28th ult., and several
bulldiogs were aot on fite, causing considerable consternation.
Three brigades of rebels with theit arme
are reported captured by our troops in the
vicinity of City Point.
Another battle occurred at Atlanta, July
28th. Our lose waa lees than six hundred,
_ While the rebel loss is estimated by General
Howard at five thousand.
The explosion of a mine under the rebel
fort, immediately in front of the Ninth Army
Corps, near Petersburg, on the 30th ult.,
resulting in the demolition of the fort with
16 guns. Immediately after the explosion
our artillery opened with one simultaneous
continuous roar along the whold line. The’
Ninth Corpe then charged on the rebels, driving them before them to their second line of
intreachmonts and taking a number of prisonere. These prisoners state that tho rebels
hed been busy mining under our works aud
that ia two days they would have been ready
ty blow them up. .
A battle is going on in which the Ninth
Corpe is eugaged, with the Eighteenth supporting them. The firing 1s still going on
withgreat Try. We bave possession of the
eatire line of rebel works with a large number of prisoners. Graot, Meade, with all the
Corpe Generals, are at. the front watching
the progress of affairs. ee:
Sherman's araty are again in motion, and
the capture of Atlanta is certain withia a

RACE aT San FRANCI8CO.—Quite an
exciting trotting match came of at the Bay
View Park, on Friday, the 29th inst., for
$250 a side, between “Humboldt” and “Lady Clinton.” As both horses are well kaown
iti this community, we give a short account
of the race, which we clip from the Spirit of
aod R. E. Kerrison were selected as
and J. C. Birdseye, Timer.
At the first heat th
in front of the stand sind the word was given.
Humboldt immediately broke into a run
which he kept up until he fok the pole.—
Dennison pulled out and endeavored. to force
the pace, but it was evidect that the mare
had the wrong foot foremost, and though she
did not break still she ‘could not close the
4p, which wag two lengths at the balf mile;
this increased to three in the upper turn,
and Humboldt came home aa easy winner of
the heat. Time 2:48,
At the second heat the. start was effected
‘with lesa trouble. Humboldt started off
judges,
was unable to regain the position. At the
hatf mile Humboldt tad put a length and a
half of daylight between them. From there
out both horses trotted finely. Through
fort for the beat, but to no effect, Humboldt
winning by three-fourths of a length in 2:46.
To the third heat the drivers changed, a
well known sporting gentleman handling the
ribbuns overthe mare. . The tactics changed
also. Instead of the rushing for the start,
both drivers were overcautious. and -each
seemed to excel the other in their wish to
come up trotting aquarely. A good send off
was finally obtuined, but the vim was all out
of the mare, and though the amateur driver
made a gallant attempt for the heat it was
useless, Humboldt winning by a good length
in 2:454. Be

Gen. GRANT’s PRomPpTNess.—Col. Wo.
8. Hillyer, formerly Gen. Grant’s. Chief of
the Seventh regiment band at his residence
in New York. Ina speech of thanks to big
friends, who had assembled, he spoke in the
warmest terms of Gen. Grant‘s ability and
firmness, and expressed bis confidence of the
and ‘success Of our armies in
Vitginia. Among other incidents which he
related of the General, was the following :—
when Gen. Gra 7
istrict of Cairo, Cilinois, news was brought
him that the rebel army had seized Paducah,
Kentucky, and were moving on Columbus.
He telegraphed ¢o Gen. Fremont, who was
then in command in Missouri, asking permiasion to go and take Paducab. It was then
three o'clock in the afternoon. —-Hour-after
hour passed by avd no reply from St: Louis.
Seven o'clock came and the officer announced
the troops had embarkid and the caissons
were ready, still no answer. The operator
at St, Louis waa questioned about the telegram, and replied that the dispatch had been
placed in Gen. remont’s hands} and, gentles
men, he -had-telegraphed on to Washington
to. know whether it would be pulicy to intlemen Who should have been the heroes of
this-war weré playing the part of walking
gentlemen. Midnight came, -and still no
auawer, when General Grant; turning to me, .
said: ‘Come on, 1 will take Paducah if it
costs me my commission.” And the morning
sun shone on Federal bayeneta marching .
That act
not only saved the Tennessee and Cumbers
land rivers, but paved the way for those exeditions which ended in the capture of forte
Froney and Dunelson. He started back to
Paducah and there received instructions to
‘take Paducah, if you. are strong enough.’
This is a matter of the military history of
this war, and it shows you the great military
characteristic of General Grant.”
