THE CoNsTITUTIONAL AMENDMENTS cy
Jtis now appatent that Jubnson and his

the organization of their new party at Phi]adelphia, in oppositiun to the Constitutional
Améndinents propodéd by Congreés. “These
propused amewdments contain nuthing that
was indicated by the course of Johnson.as
his iputiey soon. after the surrender of Lee.
The extreme rhdical element of the Union
party. gave way andthe plan at first-proposed was 80 modified that it might be approved by thé ehtire ‘Union party, but Johnson
Was not satisfied. He had determined to
@0 over'to the copperheads and make allies
of,traitorg,, and,.no concessions on the part
of Congress ur the Union party could 1nfinence him. -Now, with Vallandigham at
Washington, We is planning for the defeat
ef the Union party, and by opposing the
Constitutional Amendments he is preventing the restoration of the Southern States
to their place in the Union, In the early
part of the session he placed every ubstaelein the way of. the Recuastruction Committee, and for a long time refused to give
papers or documents which'were demanded
by Congress, and which would have enabled the Committee to complete its work
much sedner. When these pagers came,
they demonstrated that Johnson’s policy
had. .been to. let itraitors reconstruct the
Southern States as they wished, without
demanding any guarantees which would ensure the permanvutpeace ofthe country.—
He_was placing a scourge in the hands of
traitors, which they might use upon loyal
men, Sueh being the case, Cungress would
have betrayed'the people and the countrys
had that. body seongented to aid the President. in his nefarious schemes. The loyal
meu of Congress have stood up manfully in
opposition to the President, end he has nly
succeeded in getting intothe copperhead
‘party with a small faction of demagogues
who'are bought to do bis dirty work by
Federal. patrouage. The. alec pokey will
present a United front in favor of the Cunwtitutional, Amendments, ‘They furnish sa
platform large enough to ensure the support
of ‘every true patriot io the land, and there
is nothing in,them which can be objectivnable to the trie men of the South. -Ten‘ nessee, God blees her, has already adopted
them, and under the-lead of that sterling
vid patriot Brownlow, she has again taken
her place ig. the, Union. Her Representatives stand in Congress with other loyal
men, and they are ready to welcome with
open arms and shouts of joy all other Southera States that fullow the example of Tebnessee. These amendments are opposed by
-, Johnson, and so they are by the eopperhead
party, by Vallandigham, Jeff. Davis and all
other traitors. With such men in the Phil-.
‘ atlelphia Convention, it is not necessary to
ask what that body will do.’ They will indorse Jobusee, and reconstruct thé olf Democratic party, Their fate: may be read in
the histury.of that party fur the last foar
years: The time is past when treason can
be disguised .or. the peeple deceived by
““Demucratic” strategy. Johnson must go
ddwn With the friends be has selected. Men

axe is Inid at the rovt of the tree, and every
tree which .bringeth not forth good fruit
niust be hewn down and east into the fire.”
Lut Johnson and his friends be judged by
the fruits of his:policy, and no Union man
can Jonger sustain him, ‘Tlie Constitational Amendments must be adopted or the
country given over to treason, “Democracy" aud Juhuson, which are’ synonymous,

Destructive Fire.—A destructive fire
oceurred in the United States Court building, corner af Jackson ond Montgomery
streets, San Francisco, on Tuesday morning
last. The fire was discovered about 2
o’clock, and the engines. of that district
were quickly on the spot,.and succeeded,
to all appearances in extinguishing the. fire.
About dayhght, however, the ‘fire burst
forth with renewed energy, shooing and
darting upward, until it had forced its way .
through the roof, and the flames shot high
up, and the dull leaden dawn was lighted
into a ruddy glow . by ite sheavenward leaping. The entire Department was then
called out, but the’ whol interior of the
building was destroyed. The total damage
is estimated-at from $50,000 to; $60 ,000.—
The documents, books, &c., were all saved,
and buth the United States District and

was ineured for $14,000, ..

“AMERICAN,
ENGLISH AND FRENCH
WATCHES!
FOR SALE, BY
W. C. RANDOLPH,
Nevéde, Aug. 2. :
REASONS WHY THE —
AMERICAN WATCH
Made at WALTHAM, MASS,
IS THE BEST,
It is made on tlie bést principle. Its frame is
composed of SOIAD PLATES. NO jar can interfere with the harmony of its werkiny and no
sudden shock can damage ita machinery. Every
piece is made and finished by machinery (itself
famous for its novelty, as well. as for its effiectiveness) and is therefore properly made. The
watch is what al. mechanism should be—ACCURATE, SIMPLE, STRONG AND ECONOMICAL, Except some high grades, too costly
for general use, foreign watches are chiefly
made by-women and boys. Such watches are
composed of sryeral hundred pieces screwed
pairs tokeep them in any kind of order. All
and ‘*English Patent Levers,’ are perfectly well
aware of the truth of this statement.
At the. beginning of our enterprise, more
than ten years ayo, it was our first object to
make a thoroughly good low-priced watch for
the million, to take the place of these foreign
impositions—the refuse of foreign factories—
which were entirely ansaleable at home and
perfectly worthless every where.
How ‘well.we have accomplished this may be
understood from the fact, that after. so many
years of public trial,, we now make MOKK
THAN HALF OF ALL THE WATCHES
SOLD IN THE UNITED STATES, and that
no others have ever given such universal satisfaction. While this department of our bueiness
is continued with increased facilities for perfect
work, We are at present engaged in the manufacture of watelies of tlie‘very HIGHEST
GRADE KNOWN ‘TO CHRONOMETRY, unequalled by anything hitherto made by ourselves
and~ unsurpassed by anything, made in the
world, For this purpose we have the amplest
facilities. We have erected an addition to our
main buildings expressly for this. branch of our
business, and have filled it ‘With the best workmen in owr service. Mew, machines and &ppliances have been ;constructed,. which perturm.
their work with eonsummate delicacy and exactuess, The choicest and most approved materials only are ueed and wé clial comparigon
between this grade of our work’ and the finest
imported ehronometers. We do not. pretend to
sell Our watches for less money than foreign
watches, but we do assert without fear of contradiction. thas for the same money our product } .
is comparably superior.’ ‘All our watches, of
whatever gta ie, are fully warranted and this
Warrantee is good at all times.against us ‘or our
agents in all parts of the world. oy
CAUTION,—The public are cautioned ‘to buy . S
only of respectabledealers. All persons selling
