The Daily Transcript. ‘NBVADA CITY. CAL. . Muesday August, 20th, 1878 GEO, ; OTT. s our only author ized potay jh Sucramento. He will re ceive Advertisenients and Subscriptions for the TramecnirT, and ceceipt for ug_in our name. ' ‘ — ~—— BEECHER’S LECTURE TO-NIGHT “Henry Ward Beecher, pastor ‘of Plymouth Church, Brooklyn, wil! ar___Tive in Nevada City -by this. morning’s train, and to-night the ‘Theatre will be crowded with an intelli> went-and appreciative audience who % ns Ge — = ~~~ will come together to hear him talk . efthe‘Wastes and Bardens of ;Society.” “There is scarce a desirable seat in the house but was engeged several days ago, aud if we mistake not many. of those who are so ynfor-. tunate as not to have secured one _ will be turned away from the doors with the unwelcomé information that there is nut even standing room, Mr. Beecher will discuss his .subject this evening from the standpoint of ‘political.economy, taking bpt little account of the moral aspects,.of the theme, The wastes which prey up (on society and-reduce its power. to produce property will be defined as “matter made to serve the wants of man by the workings of human in‘telligence,” and divided ifto several classes. Among them are the weak_ ness of mau and his premature death caused by Ciseases—which _might_ ~~“have been prevented with “proper -.care ; the parasites, or idle, worth— ess vicious men, who'consums the products of society, bat do. nothing to aid in production ; the ignorance —~ THE CHINESE PREPARED. Not long since the Superintendent of an: extensivemining com: pany inthis county was the recipient of a peremptory written order from a large number of: white men ia bis neighborhood to discharge every Cigcaman in his employ immediately, or else thege would be trouble. Thedemand of thé white laborers is said to have been couched in terms that implied the Mongoli‘ans-wou'd be dtiven away from the mine at the point. of guns, if they did not leave.peaceably. The Superintendent, a man~ of -pluckavd rather averseto being subjected to dictation, at ence-supplied the moon= eyed force with fire-arms,,and told them what.was in the wind, It did uot require much “braciag up” from him to inspire them with the necessary.courage torepel an onslaught on their rights, forthese quiet iooking Celestigls will fight like so many tigers under such circumstances.— Then hé sent back word to the white warriers that if they wanted. ‘the Chinese miners to go,to come over to the mine and drive them away ; that he had an army now ‘capable of protecting itself ageinst any mob ; and thatif the “dietators” (as he calls them) made up their minds te enforce their threats,he would advise them to. purchase ccffins and will away their property before coming forth to battle. This was several days ago, and nothing more has been heard from the white men. Ip the nieantime;4he Superintendent's “volunteers” work with their guns by their'sides, and keep their weather eye open for hostile-demonstra=. tions of any kind, ~of the lowest stratum whieh: prevents them from ever rising beyond the ‘ capacity to be mere tools ofthe more iztelligent ; and the habit of lying, which has became se general as to almost destroy all eemblance of confidence between man and man,— Each of these branches will be taken up apd dealt with in detail. The read~-er ean obtain but a glimpse of the beautiful truths presented in the lecture from the foregoing. To hear it in its entirety is necessary to any“thing approximating an-understanding of its merits. — ELECTED TEACHER. Mr R.E. Robinson, who a short time since discarded the pedagogue’s rod and stern-looks,to revel in the flowery paths of journaiism, has al_ ready determined to go back to his old and tried loye. He has been. elected school, and will assume charge there at the opening of the coming term, it is understood. Mr. Robinson's previous connection with the public schools of this city has demonstrated-to the public that he possesses those qualities essential to a success‘ful teacher, and his efforts in that line were such as to render his temporary withdrawal from the vocation for which he is especially fitted a matter of regret tothe entire public. Whether or not he will continue ‘prospecting’ in the field which has sO many apparent charms for the movice, but.proves upon closer in®pection.to be a claim that few care to work if they can get anything wlgeto do, we are not informed. MWe sineerely hope however, that he will not abandon the journalistic profession, which a orief experience has showed him capable’ of adorning: bpt that he will instead remain tugging away in the good cause whereby the world isso mueh benefited, evap thopgh the tax upon epergy, enterprise, and genius is at times sp.great as to well nigh disourage the unfonjpnates whose linee are so cast as to make them, to a certain extent, partyrs, or philanthropists, as you please. On Saturday last Robert Hackins, of North San Juan, was nominated at. the Workingmen’s Convention, held in that placa, as a candidate on that ticket for Supervisor of the 4th District. The selection is a good one, and cannot but result-in his election, as there will probably be Ho other nomination made. PERSONAL MENTION, A. & Mallia aed oth, of. tes Francisco, are in the city. On Sunday afternoon,as a respectable lady of this city, accompanied by her son, were passing “an orchard just out of town, the lady wasan un— willing witness-of-demoustrations on the part of two Nevada City boys, the recital of which would make any decent man, woman or child blush with shame and tremble with virtuous indignation. The lady who was thus insulted has been advised to prosecute the offenders, but refrains from doing so for reasons that will suggest themselves to ‘the reader. One thing is certain, howhand by competent patties,-andun2e8s the young rascals make. timely ‘apology for their outrag2ous conduct, they will be subjected to a punishment tout will not be forgutten by them for a long-time to come, When they read this they will understand, and if wise tuke immediate-measures to atone fortheir wrong-doing. insulting young villians hails from . ever—the matter has been taken in }GRASS VALLEY SUPERVISOR. The Jast enlistment on ‘‘the Stock Board” is ‘‘the Oriental Consolidat— ed Gold and Silver Mining Company’’ tbat comes on the market at a time when the public. is prepared to deal intangibleroperty. The ‘Oriental Consolidated” has a history not ublike many other mining properties that we have known of before, that had all the elements of success with in itself, but which bad the misfortune to be ‘‘too good’’ to escape the cupidity of ambitious persons. The lode was firet discovered in Wet ravine, near Alleghany City, Sierra’ county, in 1863, and was worked for two or three yeurs w.th magnificent results to its owners, Then follow—<4 ed quarreling and law suits till the cleimants saw fit to sell out in 1864, and from fbat time tbe new purchaser devoted time and money to the perfeetion of the title, and in obtainiag a United States patent covering all the propeity. In the first two years of working the mive it yielded a hundred per cent, over the current expenses, and the work then done, more than.a dozen yéars ago, was accomplished with the aid of only primitive machinery, and but for the f of contention, even under t adveptuge it would, as is ly demoustrated, hay. the promivent wi coast. The into full S undey-Yery favorable conditions, and @ gone to work with zeal and determipation to make experience and money develup the property to its utmost capacity. On January last they set to work a new ‘superintendent, with fall authority to employ labor, to. call to his sid the best homan skill, the most improved machinery, and to put the property in the best condition as a mercantile enterprise in order to benefit its owners, and we are pleased to learn from them that the yield of the mine is now most eatisfactory. In a visit to their Office, ut 54U Culifornia street, yes— terday, we saw there a large quantity of paying ore, ranging froth the usual “pey”’ up tu a high figure, and as a large body of ore, of a high e, is ‘in sigbt,"’ the proprietors list the stock on the ‘‘old Board.’”’ In the company’s office there are several an employe exhibiting the shafts, intéresting tracings, from the pen of . mu ae M M Bright _J C Van Slyke *F Colling-—_F W Heath wW Baxter “ Ped “ -+__§_S¥Thurman San Francisco _. © HRead . : * B.D Harris “s C Smith Marysville T Smith SSeS F E Lamb Brown’s Ranch C Dean Bridge E E Hughes. te’s Flat O Bak3r Scott’s Flat W Irving Sesma H Disque Dutch Flat Judge Roberts Grass Valley F Mortell Lincoln C Seeley San Juan F Martin Reno — .J R Wilkison Sac.
