WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 20, 1884, Tue real facts of the Cleveland soundal case will now come out, by the suit for libel of the Rev. Dr.Ball, the Baptist clergyman who firat pub~ Yished the facts, against the New York Herald, which, as he claims, grossly libeled him. That there is ‘foundation for the scandal, Cleveland’s own friendsadmit, Their excuse for him is that old excuse told of by Lady Mary Wortley Montague, that ‘he was very young when he -@id it.” In other words, they plead for Cleveland the “baby act.” Do we want a baby for President? om Tuers is a cause for every thing, and the chronic alarm manifested from so many quarters, accompanied by the declaration that the country is “running dowo hill,” is now explained: There are one hundred and ¢ venty-one lawyers in Congress, and only two editors to offset that mass of legal depravity ! No wonder a change is loudly called for. The burden is too great for the straggling two, aod they should be. re-enforced. ; aE Oe Vermont votes on the 2d of September and Maine on the 8th. The result of the election in the latter State will be looked for with interest, as in the September election of 1880 Maine went for the Democrats and yave the Republicans a nervous fright as to her vote in November. But it is now believed that Blaine’s friends will sweep the State like » tornado on the 8th of September. ad Dr. Axperson, President of the Rochester University, whose name. was printed at the head of a liet of Independents last week, repudiates the honor says: ‘I shall nor vote for Cleveland, and have reached the conclusion irrespective of the charges made guint i personal character by Mr, Purcell.” The Doctor objects to Mr, Cleveland on the tariff and civil service reform, _—_— Tux New York Sun says: It looks as though the Democratic bolt would be serious. Had the Democratic Convention nominated ‘Thomas F, Bayard, or Allen G. Thurman, notwithstanding the objection against taking a candidate from an October State; all would now have been plain sailing for the Democracy, and victory would already have been assured. * Tr is-now positively settled that Conkling is-not only iu favor of the election of Blaine, but that he stands ready to‘speak in his behalf. Already fo speeches are determined upon—one to be delivered in New York City and another in Utica. ——_>-—Jupce Davi Davis pledges 310 pounds to the Blaine cause. CORES REN VTE The Origin of Billiards. The game of billiards was invented _ about the middle. of the sixteenth named William Kew. In wet weather this pawnbroker was in the habit of taking down the three balls, and with the yard measure pushing them billiard fashion, from the counter to the stalls. In time, the idea of a board with side pockets suggested itself, A black-letter ‘manuscript says: “Master Win. Kew did make one board whereby a game is played with three balls, and allthe young men were greatly recreated thereat, chiefly the young clergyman from St. Pawles; hence, one of ye strokes was named a ‘cannon,’ having been by one of ye young clergymen invented. The game is now known by the name of ‘billyard,’ because William or Bill Kew did first play with a yard measure. now called a ‘kew,’ or ‘kue,” easy to comprehend how “‘bill-yard” has been modernized into ‘‘billiard,” aud the transformation of ‘‘kew,” or ‘‘kue” into “cue” is. equally apparent. century by a Londun pawnbroker The stick is It is Tom Ochiltree’s Hard Luck. ——s Tom Ochiltree, the red-headed Texas member who shares the honor of being the biggest liar of the south with Joe Mulhatton, came into the house the other day with all the infoi Sonn ANNITA MILL AND MINING z Assessment Notice.
