There is a meeting called: for tht
24 of September, to deterniine what
shall be done about the corstrnetion of the railroad. The certainty
of the completion of the road is dependent upon the amount substribed
up tothat time. About two’ weeks

when it was decided ' to have. the

—One great wantin primary schools,
is the fault of allowing ithe children
to be idle. Many teachers think
their duty is ouly to bear recitations,
‘and to tell the litle ones to study.
A child cannot -study; they do not
~~ know how; ‘it~ dees — not interest.
them. A book isa mystery to them.
As well tell au aduit-to-take-a “book }
printed in a language be knows
fiothing about, aud becou.e interest:
ed in its perusal. Children are sent
to school aud kept-on-hardbencires,;
four or six hours a day, and perbaps
during that time, receive ten minutes
of attention duritig that time, or
their recitations oceupy about that
time. The bulanco is speut in idleness. At this rate six months of
school will allow the attention of the
teacher to be devoted to euch child,
but twenty hours in all. The balance of the time, as before said, will
be spent in idieuess, or mischief, for
which, dur.ng the time, he will receive more thrashiigs than he has
hours of instruction. Children love
amusement and vuriety, and must
have it. If their work does not afford it, they will seek it some other
way. Tue teacher should muke all
the studies of small children amusing and interesting. Every pupil
should be kept employed. A frequent change of exercises should
-be resorted to. The black-board and’
slate should be kept in constant use, . .
Give instruction to a class and not to
individuals. Use books as little as
possible. Oral instruction accomplishes the most, The schovul room
should be made the happiest place.a
child can find. -Ofder and perfect
stillness is impossible to a child.
Tell them amusiug stories. Let
them make pictures. Do anything
in short, but to a tempt to keep
them quiet on hard seats without
employment. The school room is
ordinarily a prison to small childreb.
