A large number of residents of the vicinity ~——were out, though the meeting was only -announcéed @ Gay “ahead, and@ delega-. tion of fifty. from Grass Valley were also ‘in attendance. .The meeting was organized by calling Joseph Perrin to the hair. Capt. H. G. Rollins, Union can-. didate for Assembly, was then introdu‘ced and madé'an able speech, reviewing the h of opposing parties and exhorting Union men to stand by their . colors. He was’ followed ‘by J.C. Pat mer, Esq., in a forelble:speech, showing the infamy with which the Democratic name had beew surrounded and forcibly presenting the question. of, taxation.— He established fully ‘the’ fact that our heavy taxation is a legacy from Democracy. .M. 8. Deal followed. in a ‘short spéech, and the’ meeting closed with three hearty cheers. for Gorham and the Union ticket.’ The Union men -at_the Springs -are enthusiastic and hopeful, and will make a good fight. Betrine at Norra San Juan.—A Grass Valley man ‘went to San Juan on Tuesday last, and proposed to stake portion of his surplus cash. H found takers in that wie fg. His first offer wag $50 that-Tilford would beat Roberts, whith.was no sooner made than taken. _ Warming with. his subject he'‘calied for: bets to a larger Py which, resulted in his being alged in $750 against a similar ce eins that Gorham -would: © beat Haight. Our San Juan friends bet to ‘win, and in these cases have.made a ‘splendid investment. There is still plenty of coin at San Juan, if any of the *unterrified” wish to invest. ALMosT A Fire~Yesterday morn‘ing, between 4-and 5 o’clock, a smoke was ‘seen issuing from Barton’s blacksmith’shop, -on ‘Washington street, by some one who was passing, and on entering the building the bellows at the forge was found to be ablaze. This forge . has not been in use for some time, and it is thought that the fire originated by a spark from one of the forges in use. The fire was extinguished be fore material damage was done and ‘without creating an alarm. Tae WeatTuEr.—The heated term has lasted much:longer than usual this season and a considerable amount of} sickness has prevailed.
