The Daily. Granscvipt, NEVADA CITY. CALIFORNIA, . SATUBDAY, AUGUST 22, 1863. ¥OR PRESIDENT, GENERAL ULYSSES 8. GRANT For Vice President, SCHUYLER COLPAX. “ = JOHN B. FELTON, D. A. HOFFMAN. 0. H. LaGRANG&. A. REDINGTON, é C, WESTMURELAND. ATES. LEWIS SLoss: J. HM C. A. TWEED. W, VAN Dick. @.W. TYLER, = “FoR CONGRESS, A. A. SARGENT, CATINTY NOMINATIONS. FO.» OAD COMMISSIONER, @ERORGE GEPHARD. _ POR SUPERVISOR—Ist’ District, noe @Z ANDES NMEONRO, Democratic Tactics.—Were itnot. for the prejudiee in the human breast the Democratic party would not have a hope of stitcess in any contest. The inferior races have been held pp as a terror to Democrats by their leaders for years, and the cry of “nigger equality” has been sufficient to unite the Democracy for any candidate. _Unfortunately the Democracy in this contest ig’ split on the hegto, and while in the North they are trying to atouse the préjadice of the whites against the negro, in thé Bouth. they are endeavoring to arouse the prejiidices of the negro against the white laborers. The MoImpress upon them that Northern immigration with it Yankee imPp hte; machinery that one man ‘a take und do the work of ten men.— This leaves nine idle; that it makes lande'worth $50 per acre that can now be bought for $5; that we require their . labor because we are used to it ; and if Say Pree Radical rule upon us the : Yankee will qvqres the country, and their ‘ocew “will be gone, and lands will beso ‘high that they cannot Peewee for themselves or famiHere is a direct appeal to ignorant prejudice by a statement that improve: . ments in machinery and white labor will ruin the negros’ prospects. The Northern Democrats ‘tell white men that ‘tlie Négroes will rule and ruin the South, while Southern Democrats deglare that Northern emigration will crush out the negro, raise the price of lands and take away ‘their occupation. On the northern side of Mason and Dixon’s line they declare that there is danger of the-negro becoming equal to a white man, while South of that line they declare that if Yankees are allowed to come in they will be better than a Democratic negro. The Democrats of the South are very much afraid of Yankee machinery and Yankee enterprise, anid they are trying to excite the same fears.in the minds of their ignorant followers. “After reading such extracts as we have quoted, and hearing the Democratic stump speeches in the North, we are forced to the conclusion that if it was not for ignorance and prejudice thie: Democratic party: would not have an existence. Ip, the school house didaot-coutain ! “property of value,” how could “considerable school ty” have been Very plainly done. There may be considerable property of little value. — @rees Valley, however, is improying, ang has now better schoo] houses, we! are glad to say. We even have hopés that the improvement in politics is almost.equal to their advancement in schools. _We should not be surprised to the town go for Grant'and Colfax.
