‘The Grass Valléy Union says we
“atter a slander against Henry darkin, when we state that he employs
‘Chinamen on his rguch. We never
heard it denied before, and have
heard time and again that he did
‘employ Chinamen on his ranch in
El Dorado county, and should not
aye thopght of saying one word in
regard to the matter, had net the
‘Pruckee Republiean made the statement, and we believed it spoke from

Congress, will denounce Chinamen,
‘hoping to make votes thereby, and
then be guilty of employing them.
As the Union hag got its dander ap,

The Bandit; of Mlinois.
The tronble in Southern Lilinois
continues to excite much attention.
Barr, the District Attorney of Franklin county, arrived in Springfield
Thursday, and a correspondent held
an interview with him. He. saysa
gang of about 30 men have joined
together to regulate that county;
and they have been encouraged to
acts of lawlessness by the fact that
conviction fer their crime has been,
imposgible ‘because of their: disguise, and because tae punishment
under the State law was so light that
reven if convicted they might soon
return to the county.. He suys that
the officers of the county propose to
perform their duty,-and respectable
citizens are prepared to sustain them
in so doing. The Ku-Klux in that
guise and commit depredations, but
their offenses are very light under
the statutes. He says that the law
of the State provides no adeqnate
penalty fer the offenses which these
men commit. If.they do take a citizen out.and whip him itis only an
assault for which a trifling fine is
the only penalty whith could be
made. The usual action is an—in-dictment for riot, aud the utmost
penalty for this is a fine of $500-and/six months in jail. A conviction
wasalmest impossible on account of
the disguises worn, and if a convictionis had the avcused may pay his
fine and be out of jailin six months,
to murder the witnesses in this
State. The affairs are peaceable, but
men are afraid to act under the law,
when stretched to its utmost,
