Spa a wae aR we ET he -after taking oat the cost of making journal plays the sneak by poblish-/= Daily Transcript NEVADA cIry, CAL Sanday, August 22, 1875 Disre table Business. The San Francisco Bulletin, the wmostinfamons paper published on “the Pacific coast, is being distributed, gratuitously in in this county for cam“paign purposes. Every issue contains; ‘bare faced falsehoods, and no perspon who knows the standing of that “paper would believe for a moment anything it might say. The most ‘egwardly and villainoys bargaia and’ ‘gale of the influence of that journal, _Swas_ ee et cE < 3 “whether Tuttle remains in the field “‘Francisoo Chronicle—the evidence being as strong as holy writ—the feo simile of the contract being published in fall. Itwas to the effect that the Bulletin should advertise -and give notices of the poison known as chloral of hydrate, and the paper was to ceceive its share of the profits the villainous compound. Many deaths were caused by its use, and ‘even in our own county a man died ‘by using it, and yet this purity jour-, “nal is the Jeader of the purity party -of this State. its lies are buarefaced, sand when they are too damnable to utter in the editorial columus, that ing them as coming frum a correspondent. The last thing im that line is answered by tbe Oakland Transcript: “There is a fellow in this city, who has ‘been colonized . ‘here to do the braying through the’ -colamns of the Balletin, and. mannThe Hon. H. F. Page. . The North San Juan Times says: From all quarters of the second Congressional . District,;-the good tidings come to us that the Hon. H. PF. Page leads in the race. It is now conceded that he will ba elected by alarger majority than he obtained) three years ago, if Tuttle remains in. the field. Should he withdraw, the chances of Page’s election would be more doubtful. The reason is obvious. By remaining in the field Tuttle will get all_or nearly a] of the votes of the Democrati¢ Dolly Vardeis and draw just that namber from Larkin, If he withdraws from. the canvass, tthe Democratie Dollies will vote for Larkin. The Dollies of Republican antecedents, will near-: ly all of them vote for Mr: Page, or not, This isa fixed fact. Placer . county that gave Coggins a majority ‘of several hundred over Mr. Page three years ago, will give a majority this year for Poge of from 400 to 500 votes. Nevada County, that gave Coggixs wm: ijority three years ago, will give Page this year a mujority ranging between 300 and 509. Sacrameuto county will give Page a majority of 500 votes. It gave Cuggius % majority three yeara ago. Amador will give Page 200 majority. It gave Coggius a majority three years ago. Alameda will give Page 4 majority of from 1000 to 1500. Nearly every county in the District, fae Demoerae—bewepavertised Local Minyvlties, : The Great Register of Nevada cougty has been printed, and sent}: to the various election officers 6,875 names. « We have received a communication trom North San Juan, in regard .to Tattle’s meeting. In any event, we think the election of Frank Page is placed beyond ali doubt, and yet we would not have his friends feel te secure, for there is work to do yet and it must be done. His ‘facture lies in the interests of the ‘enemies of this eity and county. enemies are wide awake and watchfal. They have ten days yet to work Alameda politics: seem to ‘trouble ‘this assinine “Observer,” and he ‘sends forth an agonizing ‘bray. through the’chloral hydrate orgyn of ' Monday evening. He lies outright “when he says that there is coloviza‘tion going on in this city, wnd the ‘truth of our statement can be substantiated by calling at the office of ‘the County Clerk. He shows him~gelf an ignorant ass when he’ pro-Claims that ‘‘Page’s course in the last Congress has ruined his pros. pects in El Dorado, Sacramento, Placer and Nevada: counties.” He “will carry every county named by handsome majorities, and run thousands ahead of his ticket. He brays like a fool, when he makes the assertion that Tuttle will carry Placer if not San Jouquin. The great Chinatown. builder, and double salary ‘gtabber won't get fifty vetes in San Joaquin county. The ‘county will roll up five hundred majority fer the ~whole Republican ticket, and Page willlead the‘ticket.”’ oe Set Henry Larkin. Zi ‘The Grass Valléy Union says we “atter a slander against Henry darkin, when we state that he employs ‘Chinamen on his rguch. We never heard it denied before, and have heard time and again that he did ‘employ Chinamen on his ranch in El Dorado county, and should not aye thopght of saying one word in regard to the matter, had net the ‘Pruckee Republiean made the statement, and we believed it spoke from ‘the book. We contend that no consistent mam, who is @ candidate for Congress, will denounce Chinamen, ‘hoping to make votes thereby, and then be guilty of employing them. As the Union hag got its dander ap, ‘and talks about this paper baving tegorted to a dedge unworthy of ‘its character, we now charge, emphati_.gally, withent fear of contradiction, from an auathorative source, that Henry Larkin does employ Chiaamen on his ranch in El Dorado sownty, We know whereof we apeak, aud shall refer to the subject again to prove that we are no sian derers, as the Grass Valley Uuion ‘oharges. ~ A xxw temperance colony of imwmoigrants from Vermont has been organized which is to settle upom some ‘of the lands adjacent to Lompoc, in Santa Barbara county, ‘ A sHoas,or patch, bas been disovered by Ieieutenant Commander, 4. The tronble in Southern Lilinois continues to excite much attention. Barr, the District Attorney of Franklin county, arrived in Springfield Thursday, and a correspondent held an interview with him. He. saysa gang of about 30 men have joined together to regulate that county; and they have been encouraged to acts of lawlessness by the fact that conviction fer their crime has been, imposgible ‘because of their: disguise, and because tae punishment under the State law was so light that reven if convicted they might soon return to the county.. He suys that the officers of the county propose to perform their duty,-and respectable citizens are prepared to sustain them in so doing. The Ku-Klux in that guise and commit depredations, but their offenses are very light under the statutes. He says that the law of the State provides no adeqnate penalty fer the offenses which these men commit. If.they do take a citizen out.and whip him itis only an assault for which a trifling fine is the only penalty whith could be made. The usual action is an—in-dictment for riot, aud the utmost penalty for this is a fine of $500-and/six months in jail. A conviction wasalmest impossible on account of the disguises worn, and if a convictionis had the avcused may pay his fine and be out of jailin six months, to murder the witnesses in this State. The affairs are peaceable, but men are afraid to act under the law, when stretched to its utmost, Hen. J. ©. Burrows. ‘ This distinguished Congressman from Michigan, will uddress the people of this city on Monday evening next, from the Broad street stand. He will be followed by Hon.,A. P. Van Duzer. Mr. Burrows is said-to ‘be one of the most eloquent orators that ever came to this State. In placés.where he has spoken his audi-} ences have been immense, and everybody in this city and county who ‘. can, should attend” the meeting and listen to such an able man as Mr. Burrows. The prin= cipal object of their trip was aun examination of the mines in Meadow Lake District belonging to J. Hereford, Judge Whitman and J. H. Kinkhead. They report the mines referred te as looking remarkably well, and brought back a general assortment of specimens for .assaying purposes,” They camped ont all the time they stopped in California, and enjoyed themselves immensely ;— slaughtered 64 frogs in one day, aud also‘had plenty ef grouse and quail tocat. ‘They report fish scarce in Wébber Lake. ‘Times are very prosBloomfield, in which district a tunnel 8,000 feet in length has been oompleted in the short space of seventeen months.
